Chelsea reportedly front of the queue for Trent Alexander-Arnold but why?

Xabi Alonso has reportedly been given the go-ahead for Chelsea to pursue the signing of Real Madrid and former Liverpool right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The England international’s dream move to the Spanish giants has fallen well short of expectations, with Alexander-Arnold once aspiring to lift the Ballon d’Or at the Bernabeu. Instead, the 28-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Madrid, while his hopes of making a lasting impact on the international stage have also failed to materialise.

Alexander-Arnold arrived in Madrid hoping to compete for football’s biggest individual honours as he set his sights on a new move. However, his situation has taken an unexpected turn, with Real Madrid struggling to keep pace with Barcelona and facing questions over their recent European performances.

From Chelsea’s perspective, the possibility of bringing Alexander-Arnold to Stamford Bridge is certainly an interesting one, and one that raises the question “but why?”

How does he fit in?

There is little doubt that Trent Alexander-Arnold possesses the quality to transform Chelsea’s attacking play, even if his defensive capabilities continue to divide opinion. His exceptional passing range, crossing ability and creativity offer a different dimension to the Blues’ game, making him an intriguing target for a side looking to add another layer of attacking threat.

Operating as the right wing-back in a 3-4-2-1 formation could bring the best out of the 28-year-old, allowing him to exploit space in wide areas and dictate play without being burdened by the same defensive responsibilities as a traditional full-back.

While he may not possess the explosive dribbling and goalscoring ability of Pedro Neto or the defensive reliability of Reece James or Marco Palestra, Alexander-Arnold’s technical quality could make him a valuable alternative.

His ability to deliver dangerous crosses, unlock stubborn defences with incisive passes and provide a consistent threat from set-pieces could be precisely what Chelsea need to become more clinical in the final third. Rather than viewing him as a direct replacement for James, who seems to be more injured right now, the Blues could see Alexander-Arnold as a specialist creative option capable of giving their attack a different dimension.

There would, of course, be questions over the financial cost of any deal and how effectively he could adapt to Chelsea’s system. However, if the club can find the right tactical balance to maximise his strengths, pursuing Alexander-Arnold could prove a calculated gamble worth taking.

Is he needed?

Chelsea are scoring freely at present, with the team’s current system providing a structure that plays to the strengths of the squad and allows key players to thrive.

Bringing Trent Alexander-Arnold into the equation could disrupt that balance, particularly given that he is not a conventional overlapping full-back and the Blues do not necessarily possess the attacking profiles best suited to capitalising on his deliveries into the box.

The links are therefore difficult to understand from a tactical perspective, especially with Reece James, Josh Acheampong and Marco Palestra providing options at right-back, while Pedro Neto offers a more direct threat in the wing-back role further forward.

Rather than addressing an obvious weakness, signing Alexander-Arnold could create an unnecessary selection headache for Chelsea, leaving questions over where he fits into a system that is already delivering results.
