Power Rankings Roundup: Where do the Ravens stand entering Week 9?

The Baltimore Ravens' season has reached a troubling crossroads. A 4-4 record doesn't necessarily eliminate a team's postseason hopes, but losing Lamar Jackson to another significant injury has changed the conversation surrounding them.

A thumb injury, suffered on the first offensive snap against the Buffalo Bills, came just as the Ravens were expecting his return to provide a much-needed lift. Now, with Jackson headed to injured reserve and Tyler Huntley ruled out, the Ravens face questions about how they can stay competitive.

National analysts have responded accordingly, dropping Baltimore in their latest power rankings and expressing little confidence in the team's ability to recover. The discussion reflects a growing concern that Baltimore's season could be slipping away before the team has a chance to regain its footing.

USA TODAY dropped Baltimore three positions, from No. 21 to No. 24, and its assessment was anything but encouraging. USA TODAY's ranking reflects more than a disappointing loss. It reflects how dramatically the outlook has changed in the span of one game.

"Can deploying the wishbone Thursday night against Jacksonville really be a worse option than potentially having to start former UFL "star" Austin Reed, who's never taken a regular-season snap in the NFL, at quarterback?"

Ralph Vacchiano moved the Ravens from No. 15 to No. 20, a five-position drop that reflects his pessimism about Baltimore's ability to recover.

Fagnano was the only Baltimore quarterback to post positive passing yards, finishing with 91 in his NFL debut. That's hardly a takeaway that the Ravens wanted attached to their season.

ESPN ranked Baltimore No. 19, down six spots from No. 13. Unlike the other evaluations, Hensley shifted the focus to one of the most important personnel decisions in franchise history: acquiring Roquan Smith.

Hensley identified the 2022 trade for Smith as Baltimore's best in-season acquisition ever. The Ravens had been searching for stability at middle linebacker after losing C.J. Mosley in free agency and watching Patrick Queen struggle to meet expectations.

"Since acquiring Smith, the Ravens rank third in fewest points allowed (20.2) and ninth in yards allowed (322.2). "We don't have a second-round pick. Do I hate that? Yes," Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said in 2023. "But, our second-round pick is Roquan. And I got to say, I don't think you can get a better second-round pick."

Even as the Ravens' season takes a difficult turn, Smith remains an example of the personnel decisions that have helped establish the franchise's defensive identity, but more is needed as the road doesn't get any easier on Thursday Night Football.

CBS Sports also placed Baltimore at No. 20, offering perhaps the simplest assessment of the team's predicament.

"No Lamar Jackson, no chance. It's that simple. Jackson is on injured reserve with a thumb injury that will likely derail this team's playoff chances."

Where do the Ravens stand?

Three of the four publications placed Baltimore between No. 19 and No. 20, while USA TODAY was considerably less optimistic at No. 24. The common thread is clear: Jackson's injury has dramatically changed the national perception of the Ravens.

Baltimore still has a chance to respond, but Thursday's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars comes with little margin for error. The next few weeks will determine whether the Ravens can remain relevant in the AFC playoff picture or whether the concerns reflected in these rankings become reality.
