LeBron James gave the home crowd an unexpected sideshow Monday night, sipping from a fan’s cup during the Philadelphia 76ers’ 126-107 win over the Chicago Bulls at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The clip of the 41-year-old relishing the fan interaction in his first season with the 76ers amused plenty. Others, including Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy, were far less entertained.
The viral moment came in the third quarter, when a Tyrese Maxey pass in transition sailed past James and sent him into the stands behind the basket. The four-time MVP collided with a fan, causing the man to spill his drink. He apologized, then took the cup, sipped from it, and handed it back before returning to the floor. The surrounding fans loved it.
ESPN’s Kris Rhim promptly confirmed what was inside: “I just talked to the fan, it was wine.”
One fan read the scene as a sign of how at home the 22-time All-Star already feels with the star-studded 76ers squad that improved to 7-1 with the win:
“Bron having too much fun on this team, man.”
Another turned the focus to the home crowd:
“He got Philly eating out of the palm of his hands.”
The crowd was already buzzing before the sip. James scored 9 of his 15 points in the third quarter as the 76ers turned a 64-59 halftime lead into a 90-79 cushion entering the final frame.
The spectacle alone was enough for one fan, who joked, “Keeping that cup for the rest of my life.”
The cup’s actual owner had no such plans. Rhim reported that he did not save it, and with wine spilled on him, the fan simply tossed the cup and got a fresh one.
Another fan chimed in, “Nah, this is raw.”
Hater Report played up how strange the moment looked:
“I’ll NEVER understand why LeBron did this. Bro took a sip of a fan’s drink and RAN back onto the court.”
Portnoy took a harsher view of the exchange:
“If anybody else did this, they’d be checked into AA, but because it’s Bron Bron, SportsCenter will do an hour special on it. Who cares the example it sets for kids that you need to be drunk to play sports?”
James has been in a similar spot before. During Game 1 of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2017 Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Toronto Raptors, he pretended to drink a beer courtside, later quipping that “if she had some red wine, I would have probably taken a sip.”
The wine reference came full circle on Monday as the future Hall of Famer continued winning over the 76ers faithful.
