Kimi Antonelli dominates United States GP but misses out on title clinch

Kimi Antonelli delivered a commanding performance at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, seizing a pivotal victory that inches him closer to the Formula 1 crown. From pole position, the 20-year-old Mercedes prodigy executed a flawless one-stop strategy, fending off fierce challenges from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to claim his ninth win of the 2026 season. Despite his dominance, Antonelli’s triumph was not quite enough to clinch the world title outright, but his position ahead of next weekend’s Mexico Grand Prix makes him the overwhelming favorite to become F1’s youngest-ever world champion.

At the Circuit of the Americas, Antonelli launched cleanly off the line, immediately capitalizing on Verstappen’s sluggish start that left the reigning world champion exposed. Leclerc exploited the moment, overtaking Isack Hadjar before making a bold move through the Esses to pass Verstappen for second place. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton advanced past Hadjar on used soft tyres, while George Russell incurred a five-second penalty for track limits violations on the opening lap as he defended his position.

Strategic battles unfolded mid-pack, with Oscar Piastri conceding seventh to Lando Norris on lap eight. Up front, Antonelli managed a slender but firm three-second gap to Verstappen, prompting Red Bull to gamble on a two-stop strategy by bringing Verstappen in for fresh soft tyres on lap 14. Mercedes resisted the bait, keeping Antonelli out on his original set, intent on maintaining a one-stop race. Hamilton and Leclerc both pitted for medium tyres, as did the McLarens, temporarily reshuffling the leaderboard to Antonelli, Hadjar, and Russell.

The race’s turning point came when Verstappen, plagued by engine braking issues that rendered his car “undriveable,” made a second pit stop on lap 32 for mediums, dropping from second to fifth and 18 seconds behind the leader. Antonelli, now on hard tyres, faced pressure from Leclerc, who remained on mediums alongside Hamilton. However, when the Ferraris switched to hards in the race’s final third, they fell behind Verstappen, who had to first dispatch Norris. Their battle allowed Leclerc to close in, culminating in a dramatic lap 47 where Verstappen overtook Norris at Turn 1, only to be passed by Leclerc two laps later on the back straight.

Antonelli’s lead remained unchallenged, crossing the finish line 13 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with Verstappen settling for third, four seconds further back. Hamilton’s late charge saw him overtake Norris on lap 51, claiming fourth and keeping his mathematical title hopes alive. Hadjar finished sixth ahead of Piastri, who narrowly held off Russell in seventh. Russell’s ninth-place finish keeps his slim championship hopes alive, as he needed to avoid finishing lower to stay in contention.

The race also featured incidents impacting the standings. Oliver Bearman retired following first-lap contact with Pierre Gasly, who received a 10-second penalty, triggering a brief virtual safety car. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto also retired, while Valtteri Bottas was forced out late with engine trouble, causing a second virtual safety car period.

Antonelli’s near-perfect execution at COTA now leaves him requiring just two points in Mexico to secure the championship, setting the stage for a historic coronation as the youngest Formula 1 world champion ever at just 20 years old.
