Former player gives unique insight into Roy Keane's management approach

It's fair to say Keano's management style was... exactly as you'd imagine.

It can almost be easy to forget, but once upon a time, Roy Keane was one of the hottest young managers in English football.

His 2007 promotion with Sunderland saw the Black Cats return to the Premier League, with Keane doing well in his first season in the top flight.

That era ultimately ended in tears, as did his spell at Ipswich, and the Irishman hasn't held a top job for 15 years now, though he has taken on numerous assistant management roles.

Nowadays, he seems to have settled into life as a Sky Sports pundit. However, he does concede that the management bug is still engrained in him, and that he would go back in if the right job ever came along.

It's safe to say that he was more of a boot up the behind type of manager than arm around the shoulder, and while appearing on quiz show series ‘Call Yourself A Fan’, sponsored by Coral, Phil Bardsley, who played for Keane at Sunderland, gave some insight into his management style, saying:

“Occasionally [he lost it at the lads] as managers do when you’re not performing, but I had a really good relationship with him, playing with him at United and then going into management at Sunderland.

"We had a bit of success at the beginning, but it was difficult when finances come into play, and we didn’t have the capabilities to match with the better teams. But all round we had a professional relationship, although I took a couple of hairdryers along the way, that’s for sure!”

When asked what the hairdryer treatment from Roy was like, Bardsley revealed:

“A lot of screaming in your face, a lot of shouting, and a lot of tactic boards getting smashed. The usual stuff when things are not going right!”

As Bardsley highlights, his time at Sunderland was not his first encounter with Keane, and the former defender also shared a hilarious story of his first meeting with the Man Utd legend whilst playing in the club’s youth system.

“Playing back then, you’re amongst elite players fighting for titles day in day out, and to get the privilege to play for them was something really special. Growing up as a United fan it was something I always wanted to do, and some senior figures around at that time with Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, Keane, it was a great place to be and great place to educate myself.

When I was seventeen, I got invited over to train with the first team, and back then we used to start with two boxes. I was a little bit wet behind the ear back then and drifted over into the more senior box, what a big mistake that was. [Roy Keane’s] hand was just waving me away, like ‘millionaire’s box here’. I put my head back up and totted back over to where the younger players were. That was a bit of a life lesson, and I never returned to that box ever again!”
