‘Don’t Be Surprised If Jonathan Taylor Is On the Block,’ ‘Owner Doesn’t Want to Trade Him’ — NFL World Theorizes on Colts RB’s Future Amid Fire Sale

Jonathan Taylor’s future with the Indianapolis Colts seems to be up in the air. On Tuesday, the Colts agreed to trade eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks and three-time Pro Bowler DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers, and talk quickly turned to whether the star running back will be dealt next.

Indianapolis sits at 2-5 with the November 10 trade deadline two weeks away. However, not everyone is convinced Taylor is headed out the door.

NFL Voices Wonder If Jonathan Taylor Will Be Traded As Colts Begin Fire Sale

Seattle gave up a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick for Nelson, who is in the final year of the four-year, $80 million extension he signed in 2022. With Nelson in the final year of his contract, trading him guarantees Indianapolis draft compensation now rather than leaving his future to free agency. Meanwhile, Forest was traded to San Francisco for a 2027 fourth-round pick.

The trades come eight days after Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon fired general manager Chris Ballard, who traded up to draft Taylor in the second round in 2020. Indianapolis doesn’t own its 2027 first-round pick, which went to the New York Jets in last season’s trade for cornerback Sauce Gardner.

Taylor is signed through the 2028 season after agreeing to a two-year, $44 million extension in August. After it became clear that the Colts’ fire sale was starting, NFL reporter Connor Hughes offered his take on what comes next.

“Just my opinion, but if the Colts are willing to move Nelson, then Jonathan Taylor shouldn’t be far behind,” Hughes wrote.

Dave Kluge, a SiriusXM fantasy host, was already looking to the next domino as well: “Ok, now we really need a Jonathan Taylor trade.”

NFL analyst Trey Wingo followed the same logic.

“Just an FYI if Indy is willing to move on from one of the best … in football, don’t be surprised if Jonathan Taylor is also on the block,” he wrote.

However, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter offered a different read on Taylor’s future. On “The Pat McAfee Show, Schefter explained that Taylor could be staying put.

“My understanding is that the owner doesn’t want to trade Jonathan Taylor… If I had to guess today, I don’t think that they will trade Jonathan Taylor… Again, the owner doesn’t want to trade him, for the record,” Schefter said, adding that teams will surely be interested and try to get Indy to change their mind over the next two weeks. Schefter also acknowledged that this could just be the Colts’ stance to drive up the price.

Jordan Raanan, who covers the New York Giants for ESPN, speculated on the Colts’ asking price for Taylor in a potential trade.

“Was told by a few sources the price for Quenton Nelson would be around a second or third-round pick. Turned out true … Same people thought RB Jonathan Taylor would cost a second-round pick and possibly more,” he wrote.

Through Week 7, Taylor ranks fifth in the NFL with 587 rushing yards, and his eight rushing touchdowns are tied for first. Taylor ranks No. 10 on PFN’s NFL RB Impact Score with a grade of 81.4 this season.

Taylor already owns a piece of Colts history. His 38-yard touchdown run in Sunday’s 16-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings was the 77th rushing touchdown of his career, extending his Colts franchise record.

Podcast host Joel Moran already has a destination in mind for Taylor: “I think the Vikings are going to be the team that trades for Jonathan Taylor.”

The Vikings are 6-0 and got a firsthand look at Taylor on Sunday, when he carried 18 times for 95 yards against them.

Podcast host Kole Musgrove wondered if Taylor will want to stay in Indianapolis after this fire sale that included the stud guard.

“I’m not sure Jonathan Taylor wants to run behind a line without Quenton Nelson,” he wrote.

Two years before Taylor arrived, the Colts spent the sixth overall pick of the 2018 draft on Nelson, and from that point on, he was a constant presence up front for them on the offensive line.

Taylor addressed the trade speculation last week, before Nelson was dealt, saying, “I haven’t given it any thought.”

His wife, Ayanna, addressed the speculation in two videos over the weekend, a subject Taylor took on after Sunday’s loss: “I think it’s been out there already, so I think her adding (to it) doesn’t really change anything … You know everybody’s on TikTok these days. So, you just have to come into work and stay focused.”

Before the deadline, the Colts visit the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and host the Dallas Cowboys on November 8.
