There was a lot of excitement when Leeds United completed the signing of Harry Wilson on a free transfer in the summer, but he has so far failed to live up to expectations.

The Wales international arrived at Elland Road on the back of his best ever Premier League season with Fulham, recording 17 goal contributions in 36 top flight appearances for the Cottagers.

The Elland Road faithful may have expected the 29-year-old to become an instant starter under Daniel Farke as the Yorkshire outfit look to push up the Premier League table after comfortably avoiding relegation last term.

However, Wilson has started just three of their league matches so far this term after struggling to find a place in Farke's 3-5-2 system, with two of those three outings being in their last two games against Sunderland and Bournemouth.

The attacking midfielder simply hasn't got going in a Leeds shirt yet, and while the club lie in 12th position in the table, their return of nine goals in nine games is clearly a concern for the hierarchy and Farke.

After a strong start to the campaign, they have now gone five matches without picking up all three points, and they may feel that an extra attacking addition could help to solve their current woes.

According to TEAMtalk, the Yorkshire side are already assessing their options ahead of the January transfer window, as they consider bringing in a new attacking midfielder to supplement what they already have.

Their report says that they are monitoring Galatasaray star Gabriel Sara, who has been a long-term target for the club, having played in England for Norwich City previously.

  • August 2019 — Liverpool loaned Wilson to Bournemouth, handing him his first Premier League season.
  • July 2021 — Wilson joined Fulham from Liverpool for £12m, ending a 16-year association.
  • April 2022 — Wilson helped Fulham win the Championship and return to the Premier League.
  • November 2024 — Wilson scored twice in stoppage time as Fulham stunned Brentford.
  • July 2026 — Leeds United signed Wilson on a free transfer after his Fulham contract expired.

The Brazilian joined the Turkish giants from the Championship club in 2024, but has long been linked with a return to English football, with Leeds one of many interested in the 27-year-old, alongside Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Everton and Crystal Palace.

Sara is said to be keen to test himself in the Premier League, having starred in the Championship for the Canaries previously.

Sara Can Outshine Wilson at Elland Road

Gabriel Sara

Sara was linked with a £25m move to the Premier League during the summer, when Leeds were one of the clubs who made an enquiry, and he has started the new season in fine form.

His performances and output in terms of goal contributions aren't going unnoticed, and he looks ready to make an impact in the top flight of English football if he carries on what he is doing.

The fact he has already played in England, albeit in the second tier, will mean that clubs will be confident that he can quickly hit the ground running in the Premier League.

Sara has racked up 10 goals and 20 assists in total across 101 appearances for the Turkish giants, while he also has plenty of Champions League experience from his time in Istanbul.

While Wilson is struggling to nail down a regular spot in Farke's XI following his move north, Sara is confident, in form and has the quality to make an immediate impact at Elland Road.

He was considered one of the best players in the Championship when he was at Norwich, and he has reached the next level while playing for Galatasaray.

Premier League Era Before or After

Did it happen before or after?

Round 1 of 9

It will be interesting to see how much Sara would cost if Leeds wanted to prise him away in January, but it could be a signing that makes the difference between quite a few positions in the Premier League if he can replicate his goal and assist numbers at Elland Road.

With Wilson proving to be a flop in the early months of his Elland Road career, the arrival of Sara could give Leeds the quality they are lacking in the final third right now.
