New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has been cleared of serious injury after falling awkwardly while attempting to take a catch off Lockie Ferguson's bowling during the 1st T20I against India at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on October 22, 2026.

The 34-year-old suffered a neck injury in the incident but is expected to be available for the 2nd T20I at the same venue on October 24, 2026, subject to continued monitoring by the Black Caps medical staff.

“[Mitchell] Santner was treated by the doctor last night and received physio treatment today,” a team spokesperson told the Herald .

“He’s pulled up well and is not presenting any concussion-like symptoms. He’ll continue to be monitored," the spokesperson added.

Santner temporarily left the field during India's chase to receive medical attention. In his absence, Daryl Mitchell assumed the captaincy. Santner subsequently returned to the field and bowled out his allocation, finishing with figures of 2-39 across four overs.

What did Santner say about the fall?

After the match, Santner offered a candid account of the incident and played down the severity of the knock he sustained.

"It was a bit of whiplash there, but it’s ok," the experienced spin-bowling all-rounder said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Santner also made clear that his frustration centred more on the dropped catch than on the physical setback itself.

"I was probably more just angry I dropped the catch," reflecting the competitive instinct that has defined his leadership of the white-ball side.

Medical staff completed their assessment on October 23, 2026, and confirmed he was showing no concussion-like symptoms, clearing the path for his participation in the next fixture pending final monitoring.

What is the series context and what comes next?

New Zealand lost the 1st T20I by 4 wickets with 2 balls remaining. India posted 230/6 in their chase of New Zealand's total of 225/4, completing the win in the final over. The result puts India 1-0 ahead in the five-match T20I series.

The series will move to Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton after the second T20I in Christchurch. Once the five T20Is conclude, the two sides are scheduled to play five ODIs and two Tests as part of the same tour.
