In a game where Michael Carrick’s job was on the line once again, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez struck his head coach a huge blow.
Chelsea were already leading the Red Devils one-nil in the Premier League thanks to a second-half Morgan Rogers strike.
With Martinez already on a yellow card at Stamford Bridge, the United centre-back jumped into Wesley Fofana during an aerial duel in the penalty area.
The foul was blatant, as Martinez had no eyes on the ball and was intent on cynically bringing down his marker.
Referee Peter Bankes did not see the incident initially, but consulted with the Video Assistant Referee and awarded a penalty to Chelsea, as well as a second yellow for Lisandro Martinez.
Martinez acted angrily at the decision – but cannot have any complaints. Once again, he has let his team down.
The incident prompted the Premier League’s Match Centre account on X to explain the decision, disclosing, “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Chelsea and also awarded Martínez a second yellow card for a reckless challenge.
“VAR: ‘He’s not attempting to play the ball. I can’t see him attempt to do anything else other than jump into his opponent leading with an arm here’.
“REF: ‘After review, Manchester United No.6 commits a reckless challenge with his arm. The final decision is a penalty kick, and a second yellow card for Manchester United No.6’.”
Chelsea star Cole Palmer converted the penalty, as the ten men of Manchester United were resigned to a loss once again.
Lisandro Martinez may just have finalised Michael Carrick’s managerial future.
