Alex Eala wasted very little time booking her place in the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Days after her early exit in Ningbo, the Filipina star bounced back by defeating world number 411 Mika Stojsavljevic very comfortably. Eighth-seeded Eala triumphed over the 17-year-old Briton in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, with the clash lasting just one hour and 15 minutes.
It was a statement performance from the world number 19, and it isn’t the first time this year she has produced such a result.
Eala’s first dominant win came in her opening campaign of the season at the ASB Classic in Auckland. After beating Donna Vekic in her first match of the season, Eala made quick work of another Croat, Petra Marcinko, bagelling her in the first set and winning 6-0, 6-2 in just over an hour.
The 21-year-old recorded another very quick victory in front of a home crowd later that month at the Philippine Women’s Open. In the second round of the WTA 125 hard-court event, Eala won in an hour and 16 minutes against Alina Charaeva, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Eala also clinched her third bagel of the season in her next match at the Philippine Women’s Open against Himeno Sakatsume. She had claimed her second in the first set of her opening match at the Australian Open versus Alycia Parks, who came back to win the match in three sets.
After that, Eala struggled for dominant wins up until the grass season, where she really began to improve. En route to winning the title in Birmingham, Eala thrashed Australian player Priscilla Hon in exactly 59 minutes, 6-0, 6-2. She also won her quarterfinal match at the tournament in an hour and 29 minutes against qualifier Mananchaya Sawangkaew.
While they weren’t quick wins, Eala picked up two straight-set victories over top WTA stars in her next tournament in Berlin. She defeated now-world number one Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-4, as well as Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4.
Eala secured her most dominant Grand Slam at Wimbledon this year, beating Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-2 before going on to record a fourth-round finish, her best result at a major yet. The run included a huge win over defending champion Iga Swiatek, whom she beat 7-6, 6-2.
On the way to capturing her very first WTA title in Washington, Eala beat three top-ten seeds in straight sets: Leylah Fernandez, Svitolina and Naomi Osaka. While it took her three sets to beat Jessica Pegula in the final, Eala dominated in the third set, bageling the American to win the trophy.
Prior to the Pan Pacific Open, the last time Eala handed someone a very heavy defeat was at the US Open. In her first round match at Flushing Meadows, Eala beat American qualifier Mary Stoiana 6-1, 6-2.
In the second round of the Pan Pacific Open, Eala will face world number 38 Talia Gibson, whom she has met twice before on the WTA. Both of their clashes came during the 2023 season, when Eala was a teenager.
Eala first met the Australian star in Palma del Rio that year, and won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Their next bout was played in Aldershot later on in the season, where Eala came back from a set down to triumph 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The two will now do battle for a third time, with a place in the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open up for grabs.
