Arsenal Track £13m Striker After Serie A Surge: Should Arteta Make A Move?

Arsenal transfer news: The Gunners have little reason to rush another major attacking signing after reshaping their forward line this summer. Mikel Arteta now has Viktor Gyökeres and Kai Havertz competing for the central role, giving him two established options as the Gunners defend their Premier League title.

The early results have supported that recruitment strategy. Arsenal sit second with 21 points from eight matches, having scored 13 goals and conceded five. Gyökeres has made five appearances, while Havertz has started seven matches and scored twice, according to the supplied figures. Eberechi Eze offers another creative option, leaving Arteta with considerable flexibility in the final third and little need for an immediate addition.

That doesn’t rule out future planning, though. Arsenal’s recruitment team must keep an eye on emerging forwards, particularly those who could develop without demanding an immediate starting place. One name has now entered the conversation.

A report by Sport Witness, citing Calciomercato, claims Arsenal have made initial enquiries about Monza striker Gustavo Varela.

The 21-year-old Portuguese forward has enjoyed an outstanding start to the 2026/27 campaign, scoring seven Serie A goals and nine across eight appearances in all competitions. Monza signed him from Benfica for around £1.7 million, but his reported valuation has climbed to approximately £13 million. His former club also retain a first-refusal option and a 20 per cent sell-on clause, giving Benfica a financial interest in any future deal.

Inter Milan and Napoli have reportedly tracked the striker, with the latter considering him as a possible replacement for Lorenzo Lucca. With several clubs showing interest, Monza could demand considerably more than his current estimated value.

Arsenal transfer news: Should Arsenal pursue Varela despite their existing options?

Arsenal should continue monitoring the Portuguese forward, but a bidding war would make little sense. Gyökeres arrived to lead the attack, while Havertz remains important to Arteta’s tactical plans. Varela’s penalty-box movement and finishing offer promise, although his pressing, aerial ability and first touch still need work.

At Arsenal, a centre-forward must contribute beyond scoring goals. Arteta expects his striker to link midfield with the attack, press defenders and create space for runners. Varela could develop those qualities, but he would need time and coaching rather than an immediate starting role.

That makes Monza’s reported interest in attracting several bidders a reason for Arsenal to stay disciplined. A £13 million investment could represent sensible business, but a much higher fee for a developmental striker would duplicate existing resources. Arsenal should keep the conversation open, set a firm price limit and refuse to let Inter or Napoli dictate their January spending.
