Phil Mickelson earned eye-watering sum from LIV Golf despite making just one 2026 start
Phil Mickelson looks on

Phil Mickelson was paid more than $6 million by LIV Golf over the past 12 months despite playing just one tournament.

The six-time major champion's only competitive appearance this season was at LIV Golf South Africa in March. The 56-year-old, who was instrumental in the LIV breakaway four years ago, cited a "family health matter" for his absence earlier in the year, and it was later revealed that Mickelson had a stint in a rehab facility for "family trauma and addiction."

Mickelson's reputation has taken a hammering this year, facing allegations of sexual misconduct. A statement from his representatives said Mickelson had apologized for previous transgressions but denies many of the allegations.

The former world No. 2 has retreated from the public eye, but it has not prevented him from earning a handsome sum from LIV Golf. On the course, he made the relatively paltry sum of $50,000 in prize money from his T48 finish in South Africa.

But he still received his player participation agreement (PPA) earnings, receiving five payments exceeding $1M since October 2025. The payments total $6,000,254.

The figures were revealed in documents published during LIV's Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The league is at risk of collapse after being abandoned by its backer, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).

LIV's future ought to become clear in the coming days, and sources involved in the process insist the league remains confident it can secure commitments from enough players to finalize a $300M lifeline deal from private equity and credit firm BC Partners.

Though it all, though, Mickelson has remained silent. It is notable given his pivotal role in the creation of the league, and it remains entirely unclear whether he will return to life as a public figure, never mind a professional golfer.

Mickelson's finances are not the only ones unveiled in LIV's bankruptcy hearings. It has also been revealed that league executives received retention payments totaling more than $15M shortly before the league filed for bankruptcy protection.

CEO Scott O'Neil received more than $6M to secure his services as LIV vies to secure a viable future. The payment was made in June, around three months before LIV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson is among a 10-strong group of players seeking to launch negotiations with the PIF in the hope of securing more favorable severance payouts.

The PIF has offered just two cents on the dollar, but the coalition of players, which also includes Bubba Watson and Thomas Detry, is owed more than $100M collectively and is seeking a better deal.

Per The Athletic, none of the players in the coalition are expected to sign for LIV 2.0 unless LIV 1.0 is shut down satisfactorily.
