'If you are mentally strong, you can adapt to different challenges' - Arafat Minhas on adjusting between formats

The Pakistan all-rounder discusses how mental resilience enables cricketers to transition between ODI, T20I and Test formats ahead of the Sri Lanka series.

Arafat Minhas has represented Pakistan across multiple formats, featuring in eight ODIs and seven T20Is while developing as a versatile all-rounder. During his first season of first-class cricket after progressing through Pakistan's Under-19 system, he accumulated 405 runs across seven matches.

The transition between shorter formats and Test cricket requires distinct preparation, and Minhas has articulated his perspective on managing these demands. According to the 21-year-old, mental fortitude plays a significant role when it comes to adjusting to different formats of the game.

"Switching formats is largely about your mindset. If you are mentally strong, you can adapt to different challenges. Your routine and hard work remain the same, but you have to prepare yourself mentally for the demands of each format and practice accordingly," Minhas said while speaking to former Pakistan captain Salman Butt on Straight Drive with Salman Butt.

How does Arafat Minhas view the mental aspect of format switching?

The all-rounder's observation underscores a fundamental principle in modern cricket: while technical fundamentals remain consistent across formats, the psychological framework differs significantly. Each format demands distinct tactical awareness, pacing decisions and game awareness. Minhas emphasised that consistent training and disciplined preparation form the foundation, yet mental readiness ultimately determines how effectively a player transitions between the compressed intensity of T20 cricket, the balanced demands of ODI cricket and the extended concentration required in Test cricket.

Sameer Minhas, the younger brother of Arafat, received his maiden Test call-up for Pakistan as part of the squad selection for this series. The inclusion of both brothers in the Test squad reflects the team management's confidence in their ability to contribute to Pakistan's World Test Championship campaign. Their selection represents a notable achievement for the Minhas family in Pakistan cricket.

Arafat is on a high after playing a significant role in Pakistan's triumph in the recently-concluded ODI tri-series. In the final, the talented youngster smashed 61 off 31 balls under pressure to help the Men in Green chase down a challenging 326-run target.
