The 10 scariest defenses in high school football this season

While offenses always get the hype for any successful team, the old adage of "defense wins championships" has never been truer than it is today. As good as an offense may be, no team is championship-caliber without a great defense on the other side.

This is especially true at the high school level as several teams have gone on championship runs solely because of how dominant their defense was. That appears to be the case this year as several teams around the nation boasts defensive units allowing less than 10 points a game.

In the spirit of Halloween, which teams have the scariest defensive unit? That's up for debate but taking a look at all corners of the country, here are our picks for the 10 defenses we would not want to line up against, headlined by a few Super 25 programs.

Buford (GA)

The reigning Super 25 national champion and No. 3 team in this year's rankings entering Halloween week, the Wolves had one of the nastiest defenses in 2025, allowing 10.5 points. Add in the No. 1 player in the country in five-star Texas Tech defensive line commit Jalen Brewster, and Buford's defense has become downright terrifying.

Cartersville (GA)

To beat the Purple Hurricanes, you have to score a lot. Unfortunately for their opponents, that's easier said than done. Cartersville has not given up more than 14 points in any game this year and more impressively, have only been scored on in three of its eight wins.

Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, PA)

As good as the Vikings have been offensively en route to compiling an 8-0 record, they've been just as good — if not better — on the defensive side of the ball. The 71 points that were scored on them were scored during the first four weeks of the season. Since Sept. 25, they have not allowed another point on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Hough (Cornelius, NC)

North Carolina's defending Class 8A champions had one of the best defensive units in 2025 and are now even better in their bid to repeat as champions. In nine games, the Huskies have only given up 33 points, 20 of those were scored on them in their first two games. Since Sept. 19, they've posted five straight shutouts.

Lowndes (Valdosta, GA)

Up until two weeks ago, no team the Vikings played had scored more than eight points against their defense. They've given up 13 and 15 points in back-to-back games but still boast one of the Peach State's most feared defensive units. Up next, they'll face their biggest challenge of the season against unbeaten Valdosta (GA).

Page (Franklin, TN)

Two years ago, the Patriots started the season with six straight shutouts and only gave up 58 points in 15 games. They may not be that dominant this year, but the defending TSSAA Class 5A champions have statistically been the best defense in Tennessee. They gave up a season-high 20 points in their lone loss and haven't had more than 16 points scored on them in any other game.

Pinelands Regional (Tuckerton, NJ)

Statistically, no defense has been better than the Wildcats this year. They gave up a season-high 12 points last week in a 20-12 win over Toms River South (NJ) and that was an anomaly. Five times this year they've posted a shutout and eight times they gave up a touchdown or less.

Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA)

The No. 1 team in the nation has gotten to that spot thanks in large part to one of the scariest defensive units in the country. After surviving a scare from Centennial (CA) early in the year, the Eagles went on a run where a team would be lucky to get more than seven points on a defense that's headlined by several standout underclassmen.

Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA)

Since allowing 21 points in a 42-21 season-opening win over JSerra Catholic, the Trailblazers have been one of the stingiest defenses in California. They've only allowed more than seven points once and have recorded four shutouts in their 9-0 start.

Trinity (Louisville, KY)

Since giving up a season-high 35 points in a loss to Baylor (TN) on Sept. 11, the Shamrocks defense has taken things up a notch. Trinity closed out the regular season not only with six straight wins, but six shutout wins outscoring their opponents 279-0.
