Tottenham Hotspur spent more than £350 million in the summer after only just surviving Premier League relegation last term.
The emphasis was given on improving the defence and midfield, and as a result, Spurs managed to bring in only three attackers in the form of Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk. However, Spurs still look light in attack, having sold Will Lankshear to Middlesbrough and banished Richarlison from the senior squad.
Dominic Solanke is the only out-and-out No.9 available to Roberto De Zerbi, and he has managed just one Premier League goal this season, with Marmoush finally breaking his duck in Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Coventry City on Monday. No wonder the N17 bosses are looking for a new No.9 in 2027.
According to an exclusive report from Swiss outlet 4-4-2, Tottenham are among the prospective suitors pursuing a move for Brentford striker Igor Thiago. Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are also interested, while Atletico Madrid are planning a January swoop for the 25-year-old.
Igor Thiago enjoyed a breakthrough season at Brentford last term, starting all but one of the club’s league games and scoring 22 goals – the most by a Brazilian in a single season in Premier League history. Those exploits earned him a spot in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though the striker made minimal impact at the mega event.
So far in 2026/27, the South American has failed to hit the same heights as last term. Seven games in, he has scored one goal and provided one assist. Yet, Thiago’s stock remains high, as evidenced by the host of clubs interested in his signature. The report adds that the Bees hope to recoup around €80-90 million from Thiago’s sale, particularly if they are forced to sanction a mid-season deal.
Thiago has been on Tottenham’s radar since last year. The North London club continually keeping tabs on the striker reflects their plans to sign a proven No.9, as Solanke has struggled with fitness and form since arriving from Bournemouth two years ago. Moreover, Richarlison is out of De Zerbi’s plans and is expected to be moved on in the winter transfer window.
Truth be told, Thiago’s form this season has been concerning, even though Brentford have been performing really well under Keith Andrews. The Brazilian has looked out of sorts in most of the games he has played, struggling with self-belief. At the same time, it is also true that a couple of goals will raise his confidence levels, and he could be back banging goals left, right and centre again for the Bees.
With Brentford planning to demand around €80-90 million in January, Spurs have to big decision to make whether to make such a big investment mid-season.
