West Ham United 1-2 London City Lionesses: First Half Goals See Out Win
West Ham United 1-2 London City Lionesses: First Half Goals See Out Win
London City Lionesses

Three first half goals in the game at the Chigwell Construction Stadium saw London City Lionesses go ahead against West Ham United with a one goal lead thanks to Nicole Anyomi and Izzy Goodwin, but French striker Viviane Asseyi got one back for the Hammers in between that.

The first half saw the visitors have most of the possession and the attacks in Dagenham, with the Hammers scoring from their first real opportunity on the net, but changes at half time saw the game become evenly matched between the two sides.

Injury to London City Lionesses forced a personnel change during the second half and a formation shuffle, but Eder Maestre's side kept their cool.

Zelem helped West Ham control the midfield and attack the London City net more in the second half, but ultimately the Hammers conceded defeat in the Subway Player's Cup on Wednesday evening.

Story of the Match

West Ham United make changes at the back from their win over Crystal Palace at the weekend, with a completely different back four for the Hammers as Yu Endo, Eva Nyström, Estelle Cascarino and Ylinn Tennebo hold down the defence. Leila Wandeler starts in midfield over Katie Zelem with a front two of Asseyi and Kelly Gago for the east London side.

London City Lionesses make a number of changes in East London from the weekend win over Everton, with Mary Earps coming into net for Elena Lete, Maria Perez and Janni Thomsen coming into the defence, and a change in the midfield and forward line with a front four of Nikita Parris, Anyomi, Delphine Cascarino and Goodwin.

Gago gets the game underway in the Subway Players Cup on Wednesday evening at Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Goodwin unintentionally clattered into the West Ham goalkeeper Constance Picaud inside the opening minute after an overhead ball from Elena Linari.

Parris robbed the ball from E. Cascarino, where Alexia Putellas played a through ball into Thomsen, who got it to Anyomi, but nothing comes of the chance.

London City win the ball back in the West Ham final third, where Rosa Kafaji attempts to get the ball in the net, but the goalkeeper catches it down low, and everything has been London City Lionesses attacking in the opening 5 minutes.

West Ham get the first corner of the game after a counter attack, winning the ball off London City after Linari heads the ball out from Endo’s cross.

Nyström heads the ball towards the London City net but it is a comfortable save for Earps.

Anyomi gets the ball in the net but there is a collision with Picaud which denies the south London side the chance to go in front.

Thomsen clips the ball towards the net, which Picaud just got fingertips to, to push it to the crossbar, before Alexia’s shot from 25 yards out saw the keeper keep her clean sheet just under 20 minutes.

Thomsen’s strike goes over the crossbar after cutting inside from outside the West Ham box and allows the Hammers a goal-kick.

Picaud just manages to keep out D. Cascarino’s cross into the near post and keep the scores level in the 25 minutes played in East London, with most of the possession and attack falling to Maestre’s side.

Anyomi opens the scoring for London City Lionesses in the 28th minute after stealing the ball from Nyström and having a free run at the West Ham net, and sweeps the ball into the bottom corner.

The Hammers try to react immediately through Wandeler crossing the ball into the box, but Earps claims the ball in the middle of her penalty box and claims back possession for London City.

Saki Kumagai tries to hit the ball into the London City net from 25 yards out, but the ball goes wide and it ends up as an Earps goal-kick.

The Hammers get a corner and target Gago at the far post. Earps gets enough of a hand on it to dismiss it, but not far enough, as Asseyi gets one back for West Ham with a perfect hit into the top of the net from the near post, and the scores are level with 38 minutes on the clock in East London.

Perez attempts to take London City back in front, but the shot is blocked by the West Ham defence and cleared back into the visitors' half.

A free header by Alexia saw the visitors go in front, but the referee blew the whistle after a foul on the edge of the box and the scores stay level.

Jana Fernández crosses the ball into the box, but Picaud makes a great double save for the Hammers to deny Anyomi a second goal from the German striker.

Parris narrowly misses the net with her header after a cross from D. Cascarino before half time and gives the Hammers a goal-kick.

Goodwin sends London City ahead just before half time with a ball into the far end of the net from the edge of the box after deceiving the West Ham defence, and they head into the break with the lead.

Half time rings out in Dagenham with London City ahead 2 goals to West Ham’s 1 after a brilliantly fought 45 minutes from both teams.

Second Half Changes

Zelem comes on replacing Kumagai for West Ham after the break, with London City making their own changes with Isa Kardinaal for Fernández and Daniela Arques for Alexia.

The Hammers get a set piece after Arques gives away a free-kick, and a decent delivery into the London City box ultimately goes out for an Earps goal-kick.

Goodwin just misses the ball, with Picaud collecting it for West Ham after a Thomsen cross on the far side and sending the Hammers on a counter attack of their own.

Kardinaal goes down with a lot of discomfort after blocking a cross from West Ham United's Seraina Piebel.

Kadidiatou Diani is introduced for London City replacing Anyomi, and Kardinaal goes off with injury, replaced by Freya Godfrey at the 60 minute mark.

The Hammers make three more changes to their side, with Gago, Asseyi and Nyström all going off for Laia Codina, Ffion Morgan and Inès Belloumou.

Arques hit the ball towards the West Ham net, which Picaud just gets fingertips to in order to deny London City a two goal lead in the game.

Picaud punches the ball away from Godfrey's cross before it meets Goodwin in the West Ham box, and the score stays 2-1 to the visitors with 20 minutes remaining on the clock.

Kafaji is unable to get the ball into the back of the net and Picaud gives the ball straight back to London City, who do nothing with the free chance they are given.

Diani gives away a West Ham corner after a brilliant run from Wandeler, but the corner does not go anywhere.

Hammers Push for an Equaliser

Grace Geyoro replaces Delphine Cascarino for London City at 75 minutes, with both sides having an equal amount of possession and attacks in the second half, though West Ham definitely upped the tempo after half time.

Tennebo's cross goes across the face of goal and West Ham can do nothing but go backwards with the ball as tensions run high for the Hammers to find another equaliser.

Oona Sirén goes off for the Hammers, replaced by Sude Oztas, with just under ten minutes to go plus stoppage time as London City go on the attack once again.

Morgan tried to slide the ball into Oztas, but Linari reads it well and reclaims the ball for the visitors.

London City do just enough to keep West Ham at bay near their own net and the score in favour of the south London side.

Five additional minutes by the fourth official after the Kardinaal injury keep the tensions high in the game as West Ham push for an equaliser.

Perez blocks Zelem's shots in added time, which deflect for a corner, but Earps claims the ball from the corner kick to send London City up the pitch.

Linari heads over the free-kick from Picaud in the dying moments of the game for a Hammers corner, which Earps claims comfortably as the full time whistle rings out in Dagenham.

London City Lionesses are 3 wins from 3 in the Subway Players Cup and will take the midweek win back into the Women's Super League over the weekend when they travel to face Liverpool, while West Ham will try to use the loss to beat Brighton and Hove Albion back in league play.
