Bryson DeChambeau told he 'lives in own world' in dig at Rory McIlroy fallout

While discussing Rory McIlroy's triumph at the 2025 Masters, Brooks Koepka defended the World No. 2 and criticized Bryson DeChambeau in the process.

The two-time U.S. Open champion disclosed that McIlroy remained silent throughout the entire final round of the 2025 Masters, as the pair competed together in pursuit of the green jacket. McIlroy ultimately secured a career grand slam by defeating Justin Rose in a playoff.

Koepka supported McIlroy's conduct, justifying his decision not to engage with DeChambeau for valid reasons. During an appearance on Dan Rapaport's Dan on Golf show this week, the five-time major champion addressed questions about the strained relationship between the two golfers.

"He shouldn't have [spoken to DeChambeau]," Koepka told Rapaport. "I mean, he lives in his own world. I mean, I don't think many people want to talk to him regardless.

"I wouldn't have spoken to Rory, and I don't think he would have spoken to me and it would have been totally fine."

"I'm not a big talker. I'll talk a little bit, maybe the first couple of holes. I fully understand it. I don't feel bad. It is what it is. Some guys don't talk. It's okay. It's their job. They get to do what they want."

Given their contrasting playing styles, personalities, and approaches to the game, DeChambeau and McIlroy have openly displayed tension toward one another, a relationship that grew more complicated when the American announced his departure to LIV Golf in June 2022. The pair have yet to reconcile, at least not in any publicly acknowledged capacity.

The frosty dynamic between the two golfers was on full display during a pivotal moment on Augusta National's ninth green. The uncomfortable exchange also underscored McIlroy's fierce determination as the 37 year old sought to complete the career grand slam, ending a 17-year drought to etch his name in history.

Facing nearly identical birdie putt positions, the two players couldn't agree on who should putt first. Neither was willing to surrender a potential advantage by going ahead, prompting DeChambeau to propose resolving the standoff by flipping a tee.

McIlroy rejected the suggestion, asserting that the occasion carried far greater significance than a tee flip. He ultimately putted first, successfully converting his birdie, while the American had to settle for par.

"I don't know what he was expecting. We're trying to win the Masters. I'm not going to try to be his best mate out there," McIlroy said following the round.
