Luka Doncic receives technical for throwing ball at NBA ref days after controversial fan incident
Luka Doncic #77 of the Los Angeles Lakers reacts to a call during the game against the Portland Trail Blazers at Crypto.com Arena on November 06, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic was given a technical foul for throwing a ball at an official, just days after a fan was kicked out of a game for the exact same thing.

Friday night's NBA action saw Doncic and the Lakers record a 124-118 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, with the Slovenian going off for 53 points. Towards the end of the first quarter of the action, Portland's Jrue Holiday repeatedly fouled Doncic before a whistle came. The Lakers star fell out of bounds before throwing the ball at official Sean Wright, for which he was immediately called for a technical foul.

Just a game prior, a fan sitting courtside in Sacramento was ejected from the Lakers clash with the Kings for throwing the ball at official Chelisa Painter, with Doncic standing near the baseline at the time of the incident.

The Lakers star looked directly at the fan in question, asking him, "What the f--- are you doing?" before he was ejected. "I was just asking him, 'What the h--- is he doing?" said Doncic following the game against the Kings.

Doncic must have been asking himself what he was doing after throwing the ball at Wright, just days after the incident during the game against the Kings.

After he tossed the ball at the official, he threw up his arms in protest before immediately taking a seat on the bench where he cut an exasperated figure.

However, ultimately, the incident did not matter. Doncic continued his offensive tear, dropping 53 points on Portland following his 40-point night against the Kings.

The Lakers' stars' worst two offensive performances of the 2026-27 NBA season came during Los Angeles' opening two games against the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers, games in which Doncic scored 28 and 23 points, respectively.

Since then, his worst scoring performance was a 37-point night last week against Golden State, and Doncic is currently averaging 38.5 points per game.

Following the win over Portland, Lakers head coach JJ Redick replied, "sure, sure," when asked if he was running out of superlatives to describe Doncic's performances on the floor for Los Angeles, prompting laughter from reporters.

He added, "I'm gonna just sit around and will gather one day come up with more superlatives so I have more words ready. But for now, I don't have any words."

While the 2026-27 season is still young, Doncic looks to be the frontrunner in the MVP conversation.

The Lakers return to action on Sunday night at Little Caesars Palace, when they will take on the Detroit Pistons.
