Bayern Munich might be playing at home tomorrow, but someone should probably remind the Allianz Arena crowd that this isn’t going to feel like a traditional home game.
According to Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), up to 13,000 FC Magdeburg supporters are expected to make the trip to Munich for the DFB-Pokal showdown. The official away section, which holds approximately 7,500 fans, has already sold out, but that hasn’t stopped additional supporters from snapping up tickets in other sections of the stadium.
In fact, FC Magdeburg’s rallying cry last weekend was “Everyone in blue to Munich” as the club’s supporters began organizing what could be an enormous traveling contingentfor one of the biggest matches of their season.
And why not? The DFB-Pokal is famous for producing unexpected results, and FC Magdeburg clearly aren’t traveling to Munich simply to admire the stadium or pick up a souvenir shirt. Back in 2000, FC Magdeburg pulled off the unthinkable against—you guessedit—Bayern Munich.
Bayern will enter the contest as overwhelming favorites, but the visitors are bringing plenty of belief, enthusiasm, and potentially enough supporters to make themselves heard throughout the Allianz Arena.
For the Bavarians, this is another reminder that there is no room for complacency in cup football. FC Bayern are expected to win, but FC Magdeburg are clearly embracing the opportunity to create something special.
Thirteen thousand opposing supporters in your own stadium? That’s quite the away-day invasion. Bayern had better make sure the football does the talking.
