He was the first golfer to deny Jack Nicklaus a major win when he held at least a share of the 54-hole lead

Jack Nicklaus was either the outright leader or tied for the lead after 54 holes of a major championship on 12 occasions during his incredible career.

Remarkably, Jack Nicklaus won eight of his 18 majors having trailed going into the final round, most notably at The Masters in 1986 when he was four shots off the lead.

There were just two occasions in his career where Nicklaus led the way going into the last round of a major and failed to get across the line.

The first instance came at The Masters in 1971 when Charles Coody emerged as a surprise winner.

How Charles Coody overcame Jack Nicklaus to win The Masters

Coody was 33 years of age when he teed off at Augusta National in 1971. He had been a professional for eight years, but had only won twice on the PGA Tour.

There was good reason to think that he could perform well at The Masters. Coody had finished tied for fifth at the first major of the year back in 1969, while he came 12th one year later.

Nicklaus, meanwhile, had not won The Masters since 1966. However, that week saw the Golden Bear win his third Green Jacket, so it was understandable that many expected him to be the man to beat when he opened up with a round of 70 at the 1971 event.

Coody had stolen the show on Thursday, with his round of 66 leaving him three clear of anyone. But by the end of the third round, Coody and Nicklaus were tied at the top on seven under par.

Incredibly, Nicklaus played the back nine on Sunday in one over par. His final birdie of the tournament had come on the eighth hole.

And when Coody birdied both the 15th and 16th holes, he was able to move two shots clear of Nicklaus and secure his first major championship.

Strangely, Coody failed to win on the PGA Tour again during his career.

The 1971 season also saw him make his debut in The Open Championship, where he finished fifth alongside one Jack Nicklaus.

Despite believing that he had the ideal game for links golf, Coody never actually played in The Open again. His prize money for his top-10 finish at Royal Birkdale still did not cover all of his costs, and he went on to express regret for not playing in The Open again, having prioritised the events that would give him a better chance of making a living.

Tom Watson is the only other player to stop Jack Nicklaus converting a 54-hole lead in a major

It was at The Open Championship six years later that Nicklaus would fail to convert a 54-hole lead in a major for the final time.

On that occasion, Tom Watson won the iconic battle that became known as the Duel in the Sun at Turnberry.

Nicklaus would, however, get his hands on the Claret Jug for a third time the following year.
