Former India captain Rohit Sharma brought humour to India's World Cup ambitions during an appearance on his television show Family Full House with Rohit Sharma, which premiered on Sony Entertainment Television on September 19, 2026.
The conversation revolved around a light-hearted theory about cricket captains and their chances of winning major tournaments after getting married. Stand-up comedian Aakash Gupta introduced the theory, while Shaadi (dot) com founder Anupam Mittal joined in with his take on the subject. India's current ODI captain, Shubman Gill, eventually became the centre of the discussion.
The exchange gained traction on social media after Sony Entertainment Television released promotional content from the episode. Rohit, who led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, joined the conversation with his trademark humour, particularly when the discussion shifted towards India's 2027 ODI World Cup ambitions.
"History has it that whenever a captain gets married, he wins the World Cup the very next year," Gupta said.
Gupta backed his theory by pointing to Australia's Pat Cummins, who led his team to the 2023 ODI World Cup title after getting married. He also brought up India's 2023 World Cup campaign, which ended in a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the final.
Gupta's observation prompted a humorous discussion about whether India's next ODI captain, Shubman Gill, should get married before the 2027 World Cup. Actor Sumeet Vyas also appeared to support the theory, calling it spot on.
Mittal revealed that his platform had already created a profile for Gill on its platform and approached the batter with the proposal. He joked that all the team needed was for Gill to swipe right.
However, Gill reportedly declined the approach, making it clear that he was not looking to get married just yet. The revelation added another layer to the conversation, with the panellists continuing to tease the India captain about the supposed connection between marriage and World Cup success.

Rohit was quick to join the banter when he heard that Gill had turned down the proposal. The former India captain, who has already experienced the joy of lifting the T20 World Cup in 2024, appeared determined to leave no stone unturned in India's pursuit of another global title.
Rather than accepting Gill's decision to stay away from marriage for now, Rohit jokingly suggested that he was willing to do whatever it took to bring the World Cup home.
"No, man! I will do whatever it takes to win a World Cup," Rohit said.
The comment drew attention to India's ambition of winning the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Rohit has retired from Test and T20I cricket but remains committed to playing ODI cricket, with the next World Cup forming a major part of his plans.
