Liverpool Transfer News: Liverpool’s defensive plans face a major decision as Virgil van Dijk approaches the final months of his contract. The captain remains central, but Liverpool cannot leave succession planning until his future becomes clear. Joe Gomez offers experience, while summer signing Ronald Araújo brings further quality; neither removes the need for a long-term answer at centre-back.
Andoni Iraola wants his side to defend high, press aggressively and build attacks from the back. That approach places heavy demands on defenders, who must read danger early, cover space behind them and stay composed under pressure. Liverpool’s uneven start to the 2026/27 campaign has made defensive stability an important part of the rebuild.
Jarell Quansah knows the club already. The England defender left Anfield for Bayer Leverkusen, where he has earned regular opportunities. In eight Bundesliga appearances this season, he has played 613 minutes, scored once, completed 87% of his passes and made 22 clearances. His passing ability could help Liverpool build from the back, while his defensive work offers evidence of his progress in Germany.
Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes his old club should bring Quansah back as Van Dijk’s successor. The Liverpool Echo reports that Liverpool hold a £56 million buyback option, giving them a route to re-sign the 23-year-old if he wants to return.
Liverpool should prioritise the clause before committing a larger fee to an external target. Quansah knows the club’s standards, which could shorten his adjustment period under Iraola. His work in Germany gives Liverpool evidence of his progress beyond the limited opportunities he received before leaving.
That does not make the decision automatic. A £56 million investment is substantial, and the recruitment team must compare Quansah’s development, wages and likely role with other centre-back options. The club should establish Van Dijk’s intentions before deciding how much responsibility the younger defender would carry alongside Araújo.
Still, Quansah offers a rare combination of age, Premier League experience, homegrown status and familiarity with Liverpool. If he is ready to return and accept a leading role, the buyback option gives the club a route to succession rather than forcing an expensive search from scratch.
