Tottenham Eye Chelsea’s £67m Right-Back: Should The Blues Consider Selling?
Chelsea

Chelsea sit fourth in the Premier League with 13 points from seven matches, recording four wins, one draw and two defeats. Xabi Alonso has maintained an attacking approach, although his flexible defensive system places considerable demands on players who cover the flanks.

Reece James remains a key option at right-back, while summer arrival Marco Palestra gives Alonso another young player who can operate in wide defensive roles. However, competition for minutes has increased, leaving Malo Gusto with a more rotational role during the opening weeks of 2026/27.

The 23-year-old Frenchman has made five Premier League appearances, including three starts, and played 276 minutes. He has completed 81% of his passes, recorded seven clearances and four interceptions, and won three tackles. Although he has yet to score or assist in the league, he provided an assist across two EFL Cup appearances.

That reduced playing time has attracted attention from elsewhere in London.

Chelsea transfer news: Why are Tottenham monitoring Malo Gusto?

According to reporting carried by Flashscore, Tottenham are monitoring the Chelsea defender as uncertainty surrounds Pedro Porro’s future. Reports suggest the Spaniard could consider leaving in 2027, prompting Roberto De Zerbi’s side to assess possible replacements.

Gusto offers recovery speed, attacking runs and the flexibility to operate as either a conventional right-back or a wing-back. Those qualities could suit Spurs if De Zerbi wants his wide defenders to support attacks while recovering quickly when opponents break forward.

Chelsea, however, have little reason to rush into negotiations. Gusto’s contract runs until June 2030, giving the club considerable control over his future. Flashscore lists his market value at approximately £30 million, although that figure does not establish Chelsea’s asking price.

Should Chelsea consider selling Gusto to a London rival?

Chelsea should demand a substantial premium before considering a sale to Tottenham. Gusto remains young, has Premier League experience and offers tactical flexibility that Alonso may need across a long season. His current role may have changed, but limited minutes early in a campaign do not automatically make him surplus to requirements.

Spurs’ interest could create a useful negotiating opportunity, particularly if Porro pursues an exit. However, Chelsea would need to secure a suitable replacement before releasing another defender, especially with James’ availability an ongoing consideration.

A fee near £50 million would give the Blues room to assess alternatives, although that figure represents an editorial estimate rather than a reported offer. Selling Gusto without a replacement would risk weakening Chelsea’s defensive depth for a relatively short-term financial gain.
