Tottenham are to issue a formal complaint over the decision not to show a red card to Leeds defender Jayden Bogle after his challenge on Mathys Tel at Elland Road.
Video replays showed Bogle catch the Spurs forward on the back of his left ankle in the first half of Saturday’s lunchtime kick off but despite a lengthy review by the VAR, referee Jon Brooks was not sent to the pitchside monitor.
Tel came back on but was replaced by Dominic Solanke after 43 minutes and Leeds went on to win the game 1-0 through a Noel Okafor goal.
Spurs may cite the red card shown to Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in the previous Saturday’s clash at the Tottenham Stadium for his foul on Micky van de Ven.
On that occasion, referee Michael Oliver originally gave a yellow card but it was upgraded after a video assistant referee review.
Former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann said told BBC that the Leeds defender was ‘fortunate’ not to be dismissed.
‘Bogle's challenge meets the criteria for serious foul play as he endangers the safety of an opponent,’ Cann said. ‘He can consider himself lucky to still be on the pitch.’
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was more critical of his own players afterwards, but did say of the decision: 'I have big confidence in the referee. Nothing changes if he goes to the monitor.
'If they didn't take the right decision I don't know. We have to keep the eyes on the performance where can improve.'
The decision will be reviewed by the Key Match Incidents Panel in the coming days. Mateta is serving a three-match suspension after the Football Association rejected Palace's appeal against his red card he received in their 2–0 defeat to Tottenham.
