Michael Carrick suffered his heaviest defeat as Manchester United head coach on Wednesday night as the Reds collapsed to a 4-1 defeat in the Champions League against Como. It was a dire display, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring a mere consolation goal in the first minute of stoppage time.

Most of the away end left early as the rain belted down in Como. Carrick acknowledged those who stayed until the end with an apologetic gesture. To make matters worse, Bruno Fernandes spoke out against the tactics instructed by Carrick’s staff and, therefore, threw the head coach under the bus.

Last week, Lisandro Martinez called out the board, including Jason Wilcox, but now the suits have appeared to have had their say – at least through briefing the press in the hours following United’s humiliating defeat to Como.

The result means United have just two wins from their first 11 games across all competitions this season. That form isn’t sustainable, and Carrick knows it.

According to The Times, United’s hierarchy has been left shocked by the poor standards shown by the players on the pitch in Italy. It is also noted that the board feel they should take a portion of the blame for the slump in form that has left Carrick fighting to save his job.

The report doesn’t clarify whether Carrick is certain to be in charge when United host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday. However, it does state that senior officials have a “certain amount of sympathy” for the United head coach.

Chief executive Omar Berrada, the director of football, Jason Wilcox, and other senior figures, including co-owners Jim Ratcliffe, will decide whether Carrick should remain in charge of the team for the next match in three games.

However, sympathy isn’t enough when you are managing United. It doesn’t change the fact that the buck stops with Carrick.

Como breezed past United on the night, made light work of Carrick’s side, and the players are being accused of not matching their opponents’ intensity each week. For instance, the Italian side ran 4.2km more than United. Their progressive coach, Cesc Fabregas, even told his players to stop running in the final 10 minutes.
