This week the Raiders head to the Meadowlands in New Jersey to face the New York Jets. Neither team is looking too hot at the moment. The Raiders are on a four-game losing streak and the Jets just lost to the previously winless Dolphins. To get a feel for how this one could play out, we get the takes from the Raiders Wire staff.
The Jets have struggled offensively, ranking in the bottom half in passing yards, rushing yards, and points per game. However, playing against a defense that has surrendered the fourth-most points per game and playing at home should give New York's offense a boost. That and the Jets' solid pass defense should keep the Raiders' losing streak going.
The Jets have been the NFL's slowest-starting offense since last season, so this is the week the Raiders finally don't have to dig out of an early hole. Put Kirk Cousins against a defense with one interception in 24 games, and I think the losing streak ends at four.
The Raiders will have some success running the ball and getting pressure on Geno Smith. Look for Brock Bowers and Tre Tucker to have good games.
Nothing about this Raiders team right now inspires confidence in me. And it isn't because they've lost four straight. It's the manner in which they lost them. Either just getting flat out streamrolled or giving up a ton of points and then trying to make a comeback when it's too late. The offensive line is starting to look like who we thought they were and the defense simply doesn't look smart. And playing on the east coast? Ugh.
That being said, I have less confidence in Geno Smith. Perhaps that comes from the experience with him in Las Vegas last season, who knows. But I think the Jets record reflects that he's not the answer, with their only wins coming over a hapless Titans team and a low-scoring affair against the Browns. And they're coming off handing the Dolphins their first win of the season. The same Dolphins team the Raiders put a hurting on in the opener. I see a close one here.
