Portsmouth intrigue as new surprise twist emerges in Championship rivals Burnley's manager hunt

Pompey travel to Burnley on Saturday with 10 points separating the two teams in the Championship table

A new contender for the vacant manager’s job at Burnley has emerged, after it was reported that two of the early frontrunners for the role will not be heading to Turf Moor.

Ex-Wolves and Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards, along with Carlos Corberan, formerly of West Brom, had been identified as potential replacements for Nicky Hayen, who was sacked after the Clarets’ 4-1 defeat at Lincoln City on Saturday - a result that leaves them 22nd in the Championship table.

However, after holding talks with the Burnley hierarchy, it has been reported that Edwards has backed away from the vacant position.

Meanwhile, it’s also been suggested that Coberan is not interested as he holds out for a Premier League job.

The Championship strugglers’ next game is against Pompey on Saturday.

The Blues travel to the north west with one defeat in eight and sit just two points off the play-offs in 11th position.

Yet the uncertainty surrounding the managerial situation at Turf Moor could leave John Mousinho guessing what lies in store for his side in Lancashire.

A potential clue, however, has emerged via The Athletic. They’re reporting former CSKA Moscow boss Fabio Celestini is now a ‘strong contender’ to be the new Burnley boss.

They also add that the 50-year-old has already travelled to England with his potential backroom team despite no agreement being in place.

Celestini has been out of work since leaving CSKA, whom he guided to the Russian Super Cup in 2025, since May.

The former Marseille and Getafe player has also enjoyed success back in his home country, winning the Swiss Super League and cup while in charge of Basel.

Burnley’s newly-appointed chief of football, Diego Lopez, is leading the search for a new manager.

The Clarets occupy one of the three Championship relegation places after picking up just one win from their first 12 games of the season.

Pompey travel to Turf Moor with the hosts now going a full year without securing a home win in the league.
