Ben Chrisene plots Norwich City Championship fightback

Five successive Championship defeats have left City just one place and one point above the relegation zone, with their declining performance levels since the international break adding to the concern.

Ahead of a trip to Charlton, who are themselves winless in eight, Chrisene believes one victory could be enough to shift the mood and restore some of the confidence that fuelled last season’s revival.

"We've done it before. It shows you're never in this situation for a long time. We don't want to create habits, especially bad ones. We want to create good habits," Chrisene told the Pink Un.

"We don't want to look too much into the past, but we've shown that we can turn things around and I'm optimistic and so is the manager. It just takes one game to change that.

"When we won a few games last season, We went on a really good run. We then carried that over to each game and we got more and more confident. Whereas this season, it was similar to this time last season as well, where you lose a game, you lose two games and all of a sudden you're spiralling and you're losing game after game.

"It knocks your confidence a bit, but at the same time, we can't have any excuses. We can't put it down to one thing or another thing. We've got to just take the next game as it is at face value and kind of change things just through hard work and determination."

Reversing that momentum would also help repair a relationship with supporters that has become increasingly strained during City's losing run.

Saturday's defeat to Portsmouth brought perhaps the clearest expression of that frustration yet, with City's players on the receiving end of chants of 'you're not fit to wear the shirt'. Chrisene understands the anger but has urged supporters to stick with the players as they search for a way out of their slump.

"I feel for the fans because you pay money, you watch your team, you love your team, but then they don't give it back almost," he said.

"But without trying to annoy them, you've got to be patient at the same time. You've got to back us. You've got to be with us in this because ultimately we're all in this together. If we try and stay positive, try and want to win as much as the next person, then things will get better over time.

"If things start to get negative, you start to look at the bad things and things will never improve. So we've got to just all stick together.

"But I understand the frustration and trust me, we're all frustrated in the changing room right now. It's not a nice feeling. We understand that. We've got to show that, as players, we want to make things right."
