SC Freiburg have reportedly renewed their interest in FC Schalke 04 defender Mertcan Ayhan, with the Bundesliga club continuing to monitor one of the Royal Blues’ most promising young talents.
The 20-year-old has attracted attention from several clubs following his development at Schalke, with Freiburg previously exploring the possibility of signing the centre-back before he established himself in the first team.
According to reports from Sport.de, Freiburg are among the clubs keeping tabs on Ayhan, who has also attracted interest from abroad. However, there is currently no indication that a transfer is close, with Schalke holding a strong negotiating position following the defender’s recent contract extension.
Ayhan committed to Schalke despite transfer interest
Ayhan came through Schalke’s academy after joining the club as a youngster and enjoyed a breakthrough during the 2025/26 campaign, making 27 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga as the Gelsenkirchen side secured promotion.
His performances attracted interest from a number of clubs, with Freiburg previously linked alongside Turkish giants Galatasaray. The defender ultimately opted to remain at his boyhood club, signing a new contract in July 2026 that runs until 2030.
Crucially for Schalke, the new agreement does not contain a release clause, meaning the club would retain control over any potential transfer fee.
The Royal Blues are therefore in a strong position should Freiburg or another interested side decide to make a formal approach.
Freiburg could face stiff competition for Ayhan
Freiburg are not the only club reported to have shown an interest in Ayhan. Several sides from abroad have monitored his progress, while previous reports also linked Italian outfit Roma with a possible move.
Nevertheless, a departure from Schalke would represent a significant decision for the young defender, who has previously made clear his desire to continue developing at the club where he grew up.
Ayhan’s immediate future could also depend on his opportunities under head coach Miron Muslic. The defender has faced increased competition for places in recent weeks and is yet to make his Bundesliga breakthrough, although Schalke have continued to view him as an important prospect for the future.
For Freiburg, signing Ayhan would offer the opportunity to add another young defensive talent to their squad. However, with the player tied down to a long-term contract and no release clause in place, any potential deal would likely require negotiations with Schalke.
