Brooks Koepka makes staggering cheating accusation against PGA Tour players

Golf is a sport known for its etiquette and respect for the rules, but Brooks Koepka believes many PGA Tour stars ignore some of those

Brooks Koepka believes most PGA Tour players are willing to cheat by improving their lie without informing a tour official. Koepka, who returned to the tour in January after leaving LIV Golf, was asked about the honesty of players who, intentionally or unintentionally, improve their lie. Rule 8.1a of golf states: "A player cannot move, bend, or break growing vegetation if doing so improves any of these (lie) conditions. The rule also prohibits actions such as pressing down sand or loose soil and altering the ground to gain an advantage."

Many will remember the infamous incident when Bryson DeChambeau stomped over thick grass at the Open, which resulted in him being handed a two-stroke penalty. In 2010, Brian Davis displayed his sportsmanship at the 2010 Verizon Heritage, when he informed a tour official that he moved an immovable object, resulting him him being handed a two-stroke penalty. When asked if his fellow PGA Tour stars were as honest as Davis, Koepka was unconvinced.

Spaking on the Dan on Golf YouTube show, Rapaport said: “Yeah, I’ve noticed a lot of guys do it. I think guys get away with it more because you’re not on top of them.

"I might be over there hitting my shot, but you’re over here in the left rough. And guys definitely do it. It’s just, how are you going to prove it?”

When asked if he would confront another player who does this, Koepka added: “Yeah. If it’s blatantly obvious. Yeah. But it’s hard to tell. There’s one I saw this year that was really bad.

“Not going to name the player. He’s not playing in this, but it was pretty bad. And then you see the takeaway, and you can see the whole ball. It was a chip. I saw it. He went for the backswing right here and you could just see the whole ball.”

There have been many other high-profile incidents which left fans of the sport enraged. In 2019, Patrick Reed was caught improving the conditions around his ball at the Hero World Challenge.

He was then handed a two-stroke penalty which turned his bogey into a damaging triple-bogey. At the time, Koepka admitted he confronted his fellow countryman after spotting his act of gamesmanship.

In a 2020 interview with Sirius/XMI, Reed said: “I think, yeah, yeah. I don’t know what he was doing, building sandcastles in the sand, but you know where your club is.”
