Entering the 2026 season, excitement surrounded the Washington Commanders’ wide receivers. After a 2025 season that required practice squad elevations to fill out the roster each week, Washington invested more in the position this offseason, keeping seven receivers on the 53-man roster and two more on the practice squad.
In addition to signing four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs, the Commanders drafted Antonio Williams in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, re-signed Treylon Burks, and brought back Dyami Brown after a year away in Jacksonville. The Commanders returned No. 1 receiver Terry McLaurin, Jaylin Lane and Luke McCaffrey.
Now, as Washington heads into Week 7 — its bye week — it is down two receivers for the season. In Washington’s Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts in London, Lane fractured and dislocated his ankle during a punt return, ending his second NFL season. On Monday night, the Commanders lost McLaurin for the season with a torn patellar tendon.
While Lane is out for the season, Tashan Reed of The Washington Post provided an update on the second-year receiver, noting he underwent successful ankle surgery on Oct. 9, five days after the injury. Lane is expected to be cleared by the time the Commanders begin on-field workouts in the spring.
That’s great news for Lane. While the injury is difficult, it shouldn’t affect his future or keep him out of offseason workouts unless there is a setback.
Since Lane’s injury, the Commanders have used running back Rachaad White, Brown and McCaffrey on kick returns, and Williams and McCaffrey on punt returns.
