The 18-year-old is discovering that being a professional footballer isn't always without its problems. After enjoying a fairytale breakout season last term, Karl is struggling to find his feet in this new campaign.

The teenage sensation has started five matches so far, but his overall impact has been muted. Beyond that, he is learning the hard way that playing for Bayern entails relentless scrutiny on and off the pitch.

Karl, a boyhood Real Madrid fan who previously had a trial at the club, raised eyebrows last season when he admitted that he would love to play for the Spanish giants one day. More recently, his social media activity and extravagant outfits have made headlines.

This, coupled with his ineffective displays, has resulted in criticism - and even some friendly fire. Honorary Bayern president Uli Hoeness and director of football Max Eberl have made public comments on the youngster that have invited unwanted media attention.

Karl drama escalates

Last week, Hoeness suggested that the newfound fame may have gone to Karl's head and said that he would have a "serious" talk with the teenager. "I intend to have a serious conversation with him. He's not a superstar yet; young players need humility," Hoeness thundered.

"Young players also need pressure. I don't know if it's good for Lennart Karl to always be coddled. Comparisons with [Michael] Olise are obviously not good for him; there's still a world of difference between them."

Responding to Hoeness' comments, Eberl initially protected Karl but then let slip that Bayern are evidently concerned about the youngster's performances when he said: "Lenny needs to show on the pitch that he can get out of this slump."

A couple of days ago, Ballon d'Or winner Lother Matthaus also chimed in and advised Karl to be more focused on footballing matters rather than TikTok and his eye-catching pink outfits.

"A little less pink, a little less social media, a little more performance on the pitch, a little more defensive work, like [Luis] Diaz, for example," the Germany legend stated. "I'm absolutely with Uli on this. Lennart Karl should concentrate on football.

"He has to prove himself, and he has to get playing time; there are ten national team players competing for four positions. Uli doesn't mean any harm; he knows what Bayern have in Lennart Karl.

"But ultimately, the player has to be focused on what's expected of him at Bayern. And everything else, he can do later if his performance is up to par. Heโ€™s a young player, so Iโ€™d say give him some time. I do believe he has a lot of talent, but he has to show it."

It's all a bit old-men-yelling-at-clouds, and it has now prompted a withering response from former Chelsea and Bayern midfielder Michael Ballack, Karl's agent. When asked about the situation, the former Germany captain lashed out at Hoeness and Eberl.

"Lennart is 18 years old. Where were you at 18? Just as he tries to figure things out on the pitch, he does so off the pitch as well. Social media is a major factor today, not just for the younger generation.

"Everyone is free to present themselves as they wish. It's also clear that you won't always get everything right. Unfortunately, condemnation is inevitable.

"But you mustn't conflate his sporting development with that. And that's exactly what FC Bayern are doing. It's legitimate for Uli Hoeness to criticise this public image. But it's also clear that he puts a target on Lennart's back."

He then took aim at Eberl: "That Max Eberl now, when Lennart's performance levels are clearly improving again, comes out and speaks of a slump marred with missteps is incomprehensible timing-wise and needs to be questioned in terms of validity as well."

Ballack is determined not to let his protรฉgรฉ be boxed in. "Lennart Karl has character. It's to be expected that he'll probably rub people the wrong way a few times in his career," he admitted.

"Lennart's athletic development has been outstanding for the past year. To hold his own like this at FC Bayern as a 17-year-old speaks volumes about his exceptional footballing quality, but above all - and this is much more important at such a top club - about his character!

"I hope that Lennart doesn't allow his wings to be clipped before he even turns 20. He has my full support!"

Suitors make Karl calls

Because of this completely overblown situation, Karl's long-term future has become the subject of speculation. Reporter Christian Falk has revealed that several suitors have used this drama as an opportunity to make enquiries.

The likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd "made calls" after being tipped off about some possible unhappiness in Karl's camp. However, it is believed that Bayern have no intention of entertaining offers for the 18-year-old.

"Uli likes to push peopleโ€™s buttons or, as we say in Germany, walk on the cookie until the sugar falls out," Falk explained. "Itโ€™s worth pointing out that Hoeness, who is on the supervisory board, isnโ€™t involved in the daily business of the club. Those who are involved in the daily business are very confident in Karl. They want to keep him.

"Of course, the Premier League is also reading what is being said in Germany. I heard that Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United saw that there is something going on around Karl. So calls have been made to ascertain whatโ€™s going on with the player and whether anyoneโ€™s not totally satisfied with the young German in Munich.

"Itโ€™s getting interesting. Until now, there havenโ€™t been any talks over a new contract. When he was 18, he was given a professional contract until 2029. So, we have to see what happens with the negotiations.

"Lennart Karl was very professional about Uli Hoeness' comments and played very well in the DFB-Pokal win over Magdeburg. Ultimately, with injuries in the squad, Bayern Munich really need him at the moment."

Karl is currently the most valuable 18-year-old in the world, and the fifth most valuable teenager overall, with an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of โ‚ฌ64.1 million. However, prising him away from Bayern would surely require a significant premium.

As things stand, it seems unlikely that Karl will leave Munich, but this might be a situation to watch if it escalates further.
