Xabi Alonso has explained how Cole Palmer has responded to his red card in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham last weekend. It was the first time the 24-year-old had been sent off in his professional career.

Palmer was shown a yellow card for barging into Mateus Fernandes after the Spurs midfielder deliberately handled the ball to stop a Chelsea counterattack. Many questioned why the Englishman was so frustrated, while others felt he was fortunate to avoid a straight red card for violent conduct.

Xabi Alonso reveals Cole Palmer’s reaction to his red card

In his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s game against Liverpool on Wednesday, Xabi Alonso revealed that Cole Palmer has taken his latest setback on the chin. The Spaniard has spoken to his star player, and they have cleared the air following a difficult weekend for everyone involved in Chelsea’s unexpected defeat to Tottenham.

“We spoke. For sure, he knows the mistake he made,” said the Blues boss. “It’s something he can avoid. I hope that it’s not going to be repeated. He’s aware of that. He’s mature and it was a mistake.”

Alonso was then asked what Palmer is like on the training ground and in the dressing room. The England international is often misunderstood by fans because he gives short answers and appears disinterested when speaking to the media. However, Alonso’s comments suggest he is far from a quiet character behind the scenes.

“He’s in a good space,” the Spaniard responded. “He connects very well with his teammates. They like him. They want Cole smiling. They want Cole having fun and enjoying his game because when we see that, we have a better team.”

He continued: “I think his teammates and everyone in the building know him well enough to know how special he is. He’s embraced very well; everyone likes him. He’s popular in the building.”

With Joao Pedro set to remain sidelined for several weeks with a thigh injury, Chelsea will be desperate for Palmer to raise his performance level. He and Morgan Rogers will be tasked with carrying the Blues’ attack through a crucial run of fixtures before the November international break.
