Cristiano Ronaldo learns punishment after Portugal incident

Cristiano Ronaldo has learned his punishment following a controversial incident involving the Portugal national team, bringing another dramatic development in the legendary forward’s career.

The 41-year-old remains one of football’s greatest players, having established himself as a global superstar during his time at Manchester United.

Signed from Sporting CP in 2003, Ronaldo developed into a devastating attacker under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning three Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.

He also claimed his first Ballon d’Or at Old Trafford before joining Real Madrid in a then-world-record transfer in 2009.

Ronaldo returned to United in 2021, scoring 24 goals during his first season back, although his second spell ended controversially following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

His achievements internationally have been equally remarkable.

Ronaldo captained Portugal to European Championship glory in 2016 and subsequently helped his country win the inaugural Nations League in 2019.

However, his relationship with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has deteriorated following an extraordinary incident during September’s international break.

Ronaldo left the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 after a disagreement with Jesus, ahead of Portugal’s Nations League encounter with Denmark.

The former United forward subsequently apologised, acknowledging that his position as captain meant he should be held accountable.

He also admitted that trust between himself and the national team manager had broken down.

Now, Portugal’s football authorities have officially reached their decision.

Cristiano Ronaldo receives punishment from Portugal

According to Noticias ao Minuto, the Portuguese Football Federation’s Disciplinary Council has handed Ronaldo a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine.

The punishment follows his unauthorised departure from Portugal’s training camp, with the disciplinary authorities finding that he intentionally breached federation regulations.

Ronaldo received the minimum suspension available under the relevant rules, which ordinarily permit bans ranging from one to six months.

Crucially, the suspension took effect immediately following the September 30 incident.

That means Ronaldo could return for Portugal’s November fixtures against Denmark and Wales, although his selection remains dependent on Jesus.

As Centre Devils previously reported, speculation surrounding Ronaldo’s international return has continued throughout October.

Portuguese federation president Pedro Proenca is reportedly attempting to arrange talks between Ronaldo and Jesus to repair their relationship.
