Week 10 College Fantasy Football Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Lineup advice from Eric Froton

College fantasy football managers will be asked to make several crucial lineup decisions that will drastically affect playoff scenarios. With precious little time for bubble teams to make up ground, here are my start and sit suggestions for Week 10.

Start

Quarterback

Colton Joseph, Wisconsin vs. Rutgers

Joseph has all but abandoned throwing the ball, attempting 20 passes or less in each of his last four games and completing less than 50% of his throws in four of the last five. Prior to a tough stretch against Iowa, USC and UCLA, Joseph scored 26+ points in the previous three games, including 37.9 versus Michigan State. His fantasy appeal is based on the 371 rushing yards and four rushing scores, which he should have little trouble brandishing this week against Rutgers’ pathetic 126th ranked defense that checks in at 136th in yards per successful rush. Joseph ran for 1,018 yards with 13 rushing TDs last season and should clear the 100-yard mark with at least one score against the Scarlet Knights.

Thomas Castellanos, Texas Tech vs. West Virginia

Castellanos returned to the college stage as a starting quarterback in style, orchestrating a 34-26 victory over Arizona where he scored 31.5 points. His solo-threat profile mean another 19+ carry, 100+ yard performance is likely on deck against WVU’s 121st ranked defense.

LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina vs. Texas A&M

Sellers took some time to ramp up, but he and new OC Kendall Briles are running on all cylinders with Sellers scoring 31+ points in his last four games. He has run for 95+ yards in three of his last four contests and and should light up a Texas A&M defense that ranks a pitiful 137th in yards per successful dropback allowed (17.8).

Running Back

Fluff Bothwell, Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt

Fluff was stifled for 49 yards on 17 carries in a 31-3 blowout loss to Texas last week, but he has received 18+ touches against every other Power Four team besides Alabama, when he got hurt after one carry. Bothwell produced 14+ points in every other game besides Texas and plays a Vandy defense that has allowed 31+ points in each of their last four games and ranks 124th in rushing success rate. Fluff should be in line for 20+ touches as the Bulldogs lean on his running ability with star QB Kamario Taylor out for the remainder of the year.

Savion Hiter, Michigan vs. Michigan State

The five-star phenom started the season in a RB2 role behind Jordan Marshall, earning 24 carries over the first three games. He had moved into a RB1B role heading into last week’s game against Rutgers, at which point he took control of the Michigan RB room with 20 carries for 78 yards while Marshall carried just five times for zero yards against the Scarlet Knights’ almost comically bad defense. The Wolverines looked like a new offense with QB Tommy Carr at the helm, converting 12-of-16 third down opportunities with 427 total yards last week. I think Hiter scores a touchdown and approaches the 100-yard mark against MSU’s struggling run defense that ranks 116th in rushing success rate.

Cardae Mack, Arizona State vs. Colorado

One of the apex hottest running backs in the nation, the true freshman has rushed for 123+ yards in three of his last four games and has jettisoned RB Kyson Brown to the bench. Mack should continue the upward trend against a Colorado defense that ranks 115th in 20+ yards plays allowed.

Raleek Brown, Texas at Missouri

His backfield-mate Hollywood Smothers led the Longhorns’ RB rotation earlier in the season, but missed some time due to injury, allowing Brown to handle the primary rusher duties. Smothers returned to log just four carries and now is deemed questionable to play this weekend, leaving Brown with the lion’s share of work against Missouri this weekend.

Wide Receiver

Junior Sherrill, Vanderbilt at Mississippi State

Sherrill has been a rock for the Commodores, inheriting a good portion of Eli Stowers and Tre Richardson’s vacated targets to average 15 PPG while producing at least five receptions for 55 yards against every P4 team on the schedule He has the pleasure of facing Mississippi State’s beleaguered secondary that ranks 133rd in completion rate (68%) and 125th in passing success rate. Sherrill ranks 15th nationally with 706 receiving yards, but has just four receiving touchdowns in Vanderbilt’s middling offense. He should find the end zone and catch 5+ passes against the worst SEC pass defense on Vanderbilt’s schedule.

Micahi Danzy, Florida State at BC

Danzy is a prototypical big-play receiver who has occupied a secondary role in Florida State’s inefficient, but combustible, passing attack that is generating 20+ yards on 30% of their completions (3rd in FBS). Danzy has received just four red-zone targets thus far, catching three balls for seven yards and a touchdown, which should see a bump with towering WR1 Duce Robinson out for the year.

Danzy had received more than four targets just once in the previous seven games heading into last week’s contest, but he recorded a season high of 108 yards with a touchdown versus Clemson and was keyed on with Duce sidelined. He is currently averaging 17.4 yards per catch and has secured five-of-seven deep targets of 20+ yards for 231 yards through eight games. I think Danzy is able to produce a starter-worthy outing with 75+ yards and a touchdown this weekend against a BC secondary that is allowing a 65% completion rate (111th).

Que’Sean Brown, Virginia Tech at SMU

Brown is the WR1 alongside TE1 Luke Reynolds in this high-efficiency (72% comp rate, 5th), low target-depth offense (4.3 air yards per comp,122nd). He’s averaging a solid 14.7 PPG and should benefit from a pass-script against SMU’s potent offense.

JJ Buchanan, Michigan vs. Michigan State

There is plenty of reason for concern with Michigan’s offense, but Buchanan shook off any trepidation about his chemistry with Carr by catching all five of his targets for 72 yards, a touchdown and 15.7 points against Rutgers last weekend.

Cooper Barkate, Miami at Notre Dame

Barkate had immaculate chemistry with QB Darian Mensah when the two were at Duke last year. Now, they will have to rely on each other to elevate the Hurricanes’ passing attack in Malachi Toney’s absence against an excellent Irish secondary. I think he sees 9+ targets as Miami’s WR1.

Tight End

Terrance Carter Jr., Texas Tech vs. West Virginia

It had been a long, cold road for Carter managers to walk as they consensus preseason TE3 sputtered out of the gate with an injury that shut him down until Oct. 3 when he scored 16.7 points in a 29-7 win over Colorado. Unfortunately many fantasy managers had him on the bench since it was touch-and-go whether or not he’d suit up. Leading into last week’s game Carter had only scored eight points or more one time, which caused Yahoo to take him off our “can’t cut” list. He responded with three catches on six targets for 42 yards and a touchdown for 11.7 points in QB Thomas Castellanos’ first start as a Red Raider. There is no reason Carter can’t keep it going this week against West Virginia’s 121st ranked defense, so get him back in your lineups.

Luke Dehnicke, Northwestern vs. Iowa

Dehnicke was a preseason sleeper who broke out with seven catches for 140 yards against Indiana in Week 3 then missed a month with injury. He played last week and racked up 43 yards against Oregon, so he appears to be ready to be a focal point of the Northwestern offense against Iowa.

Sit

Quarterback

Austin Simmons, Missouri vs. Texas

Simmons won the Ole Miss starting job last year but was deposed by Trinidad Chambliss after getting injured, leading to his transfer. While he has been competent for a 6-2 Missouri team that is averaging 6.2 yards per play (38th) with 22% of completions generating 20+ yards (21st), Simmons is facing a stingy Texas defense that leads the nation allowing 4.0 yards per play and 4.4 yards per dropback. While I like Simmons as a real-life quarterback, his lack of rushing contributions (21 yards, 0 TD) and Texas’ excellent secondary make Missouri’s starting signal-caller a sit for Week 10.

Alberto Mendoza, Georgia Tech vs. Louisville

Mendoza is in danger of being replaced by Grady Adamson since Mendoza has managed just one win against FBS competition while ranking 110th in explosive pass rate. Best leave him for the waiver wire.

Running Back

Jordan Marshall, Michigan vs. Michigan State

Marshall was being selected on the second-third round turn for most of the preseason, but his ADP started to fade as fall camp progressed. Marshall and five-star freshman Savion Hiter looked like more of a timeshare than a RB1-2 defined pecking order. Those fears turned out to be well founded, as Marshall topped 12 carries just one time with a season high of 59 yards and 14.0 points against lowly UTEP in Week 3. Now that he was out-carried by a cavernous 20-to-5 margin by Hiter, Marshall needs to be left on the bench this week and is on the cut line if he throws up another five-carry performance against the Spartans.

Cameron Dickey, Texas Tech vs. West Virginia

Dickey went down with an injury after four carries against Colorado on Oct. 3, and in his absence, J’Koby Williams has gone nuclear. He managed just 34 yards on 10 carries in his return last week, and looks like the RB2 now. Play it safe with Dickey and look for safer options despite the favorable matchup versus WVU.

Wide Receiver

Anthony Evans III, Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt

The season-ending injury to star QB Kamario Taylor has been catastrophic for the MSU passing attack, with Evans being directly affected by his absence. In the last three games, Evans has produced a mere 82 total yards on 16 receptions as the Bulldogs’ offense has struggled to stretch the field. The combination of AJ Swann and Parker Puckett combined for 119 passing yards and zero touchdowns in a 31-3 defeat to Texas last game, leaving little production on the table to support a startable fantasy wide receiver. Evans was a top-20 WR before the Kamario injury, but he simply cannot be trusted unless something drastically changes in Starkville.

Dallas Wilson, Florida vs. Oklahoma

Wilson had a promising four-game debut, where he caught 12 passes and scored three touchdowns before getting hurt as a true freshman last year. He has lost some of the momentum from earlier this season when he scored 15+ fantasy points in three of the first five games, and is being hurt by the lack of continuity at quarterback.

Bryant Wesco, Clemson at Syracuse

I think I’m ready to give up on Wesco altogether with the speedster accruing just 96 receiving yards over his last three games with still zero touchdowns on the year. Clemson is a fantasy graveyard this year.

Tight End

Jaleel Skinner, Louisville at Georgia Tech

Skinner stomped out of the gate, dominating the first month of the season with 12 receptions for 248 yards with three touchdowns in his first four games. However, despite being a top-10 TE in September, he has been tossed by the wayside in recent weeks by HC Jeff Brohm’s offensive scheme as UL focused on running the ball more. While I had been holding out hope that Skinner could return to form, his one catch, 18-yard showing in a 52-24 explosion against Stanford’s awful secondary has extinguished all hope for me. It’s time to bench Skinner and probably drop him if you need the bench space.
