Novak Djokovic, 39, gives health update after vomiting on court at US Open

Novak Djokovic has provided an update on his physical condition following a series of challenging performances in recent tournaments.

The 39-year-old endured a difficult summer, experiencing consecutive first-round defeats at both the Cincinnati Open and US Open, during which he was visibly struggling and vomiting on court. Though he bounced back with a triumph at the China Open in Beijing, he's acknowledged battling an unspecified health concern over the past few years.

The current world No. 12 has now adjusted his competition calendar, accepting a wildcard entry into this week's Swiss Indoors Basel — his first appearance at the tournament since 2011. His goal is to secure qualification for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.

Despite earning spots at the ATP Finals in both 2024 and 2025, Djokovic pulled out of the elite eight-player event on both occasions. This year, however, he's determined to compete in Turin for the first time since capturing the title in 2023.

To achieve this, he'll need to close the gap on his competitors during the upcoming Swiss Indoors and Paris Masters — while hoping his health concerns don't resurface. Encouragingly, Djokovic has offered a brief but positive assessment of his situation.

"I've progressed a lot and we're on the right track. It's not 100 percent yet, but I'm close. We won't talk about it anymore," the winner of 24 Grand Slam titles told Sportal before departing for Basel.

This follows Djokovic's hints at ongoing health struggles during his early-season defeats.

At the Cincinnati Open, he revealed: "It's just a condition that I have, health-wise, that has been bothering me for the past couple of years. (It causes) a lot of issues, especially when it is humid, and it is hot."

Following his first-round exit at the US Open, he further disclosed: "I think it was obvious that it was an awful feeling on the court for me. It's something that I've been carrying, unfortunately, pretty much every match this year. You know, vomiting, throwing up, a serious issue there."

Despite his struggles, Djokovic made notable strides during the Asian swing, grinding out grueling victories to secure his 102nd career title in Beijing.

However, the tight turnaround at the Shanghai Masters proved too much, as he fell in his opening match to Hubert Hurkacz.

Ranked world No. 12, Djokovic had originally planned to compete solely at the Paris Masters before accepting a wildcard into Basel.

He revealed that the postponement of the Six Kings Slam, a three-day exhibition event held in Saudi Arabia, ultimately created the opportunity for him to compete in Switzerland. He continued: "I didn't play Basel for a long time. The schedule changed.

"They moved the tournament in Saudi Arabia that I was supposed to play, so that week was free. I'm playing well, I'm feeling good, of course, it's not the way we want it yet, but at a competitive level, I'll be in Basel."
