Jim Harbaugh and his Los Angeles Chargers find themselves in a hole that seems almost impossible to climb out of. After their 24-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the team has dropped to 0-7, with its playoff hopes hanging by a thread.
That’s why many believe players like Khalil Mack, now 35, should be traded to a team where he can make an impact and finish his career on a high note, if that’s what he wants.
With the trade deadline approaching on Nov. 10, the noise has only gotten louder, but head coach Jim Harbaugh shut down the trade talk this week, in a move that has left many fans irritated.
Following yet another loss, this time off a bye week, Mack was asked about his mindset amid growing speculation about his future with the team.
“You’ve got to be where your feet are, man. Ultimately, that can be the most difficult thing when you’re dealing with a lot of outside noise and stuff. Just trying to be where your feet are at all times. That’s kind of been my thing in years past,” Mack said, according to Eric Williams.
This statement did little to quiet the trade speculation. But if Harbaugh has anything to say about it, Mack isn’t going anywhere.
“I want Khalil Mack here,” Harbaugh said Monday. “Khalil Mack wants to be here. He’s one of the pillars of our team.”
Harbaugh’s comments sparked a wave of reactions from fans, many of whom felt Mack should move to a team with a shot at making some noise in the playoffs.
“Just let him go,” a San Francisco 49ers fan page wrote.
“Khalil Mack does not want to end his career on the 0-17 Chargers. Stop lying to us, Harbaugh,” a second fan added.
“Winless team midway through the season, I’m so sure he wants to waste the end of his career on that [expletive],” another wrote.
“I can assure you he does not want to play the last season of his career on a winless team,” a fourth fan added.
Mack may no longer be the player he was in his prime, but he has continued to put up solid numbers despite the Chargers’ struggles. Through the first seven games of the season, he has recorded 11 solo tackles and 3.0 sacks.
Before Harbaugh publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Mack, The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reported last month that a reunion between the former Defensive Player of the Year and the Chicago Bears could make sense if both teams continued heading in their current directions.
Chicago had also expressed interest in bringing Mack back during the 2025 free agency period.
For now, though, the Chargers don’t appear interested in moving on from Mack. The veteran edge rusher currently ranks No. 26 at his position with a PFN Edge Rusher Impact Score of 79.6.
