Scotland on alert as Nations League rivals face UEFA sanctions

Scotland will be paying close attention to the other game in the group when Sebastien Pocognoli's side host North Macedonia a week on Friday, as they try and overhaul the Slovenians into second place in the section, after that damaging defeat at Hampden.

But the game between Slovenia and Switzerland is at the centre of a huge storm among the hosts.

Slovenia were originally due to play the game in Ljubljana, where they drew 0-0 with Scotland, but were forced to switch the game because of the poor state of the playing surface at the Stozice Stadium.

They will now play for the first time in five years at the Ljudski vrt stadium in Maribor, but have run into a major obstacle.

NK Maribor's ultras - the Viole - have been engaged in a long-running dispute with the Slovenian FA following heavy disciplinary fines, protests and stadium bans.

And they have threatened to disrupt the game against the Swiss, which would lead to UEFA sanctions unless the Slovenian FA, the NSZ, close their South Stand section where they gather and leave it empty.

They unfurled a banner at the weekend which stated, 'NSZ the choice is yours: Close the stand or open your wallet.'

It provoked outrage in Slovenia and Cesar has urged fans to behave. He said: "I am a coach, so I cannot influence everything. But I believe that there will be no complications. I hope that real fans will come to support the national team, which has not played in Maribor for a long time.

"Let's make a positive story in Maribor and in the end we can all celebrate together.

"We have a great chance of getting second in the group, which was above our expectations at the start of the section."

And the Slovenian FA stated: "We hope and believe our national team will be welcome in Maribor and there will be no trouble."
