Cooper Flagg upgraded to probable for Mavericks' game vs. Heat after sitting out Saturday with sprained left shoulder

Dallas Mavericks guard Cooper Flagg has been upgraded to probable on the NBA injury report for Monday’s matchup with the Miami Heat.

Flagg was listed as questionable prior to the injury report released at 1 p.m. ET with a left shoulder sprain. His status was then changed to probable, likely after the second-year star participated in the Mavericks’ shootaround.

The second-year star sustained a sprained left shoulder during Friday’s 121-105 win over the Indiana Pacers after taking a hard foul from Aaron Nesmith as he drove to the basket. Flagg landed awkwardly on his left arm and Nesmith was called for a flagrant foul.

Flagg stayed in the game to hit two free throws after the foul, but subsequently went to the locker room and did not return for the remainder of the game with what the team termed a mild shoulder sprain. He finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 1 block in 17 minutes.

With the Mavericks scheduled for back-to-back games, Flagg sat out Saturday’s 122-106 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Originally, the team said that he would be re-evaluated this week. Technically, that was correct as Flagg is apparently deemed ready to play on Monday.

In his two games played, Flagg is averaging 23 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game while making 3 of his 6 3-point attempts. He scored 32 points in the Mavericks’ opening 128-110 defeat to the Houston Rockets, but became the youngest player in NBA history (19 years old) to score 30 or more points in a season opener.

While Dallas will try to improve its record to 2-2 with a win, Miami will attempt to avoid beginning its season 0-4 for the first time since the 2007—08 season. That team lost its first five games on its way to losing eight of its first 10 games. The Heat finished 15-67 that season.
