Key details as Millwall come from behind to beat Bristol City U21s after Billy O'Neill opener
Billy O'Neill will join Bristol City from Irish side Bray Wanderers
Bristol City Under-21s suffered their first home league defeat of the season, a 3-1 loss to Millwall on Tuesday afternoon. Although the Young Robins took an early lead, Millwall staged a successful comeback at the High Performance Centre.
Louis Carey's side had the better of the chances early on as they exploited Millwall's high defensive line. However, both Elijah Morrison and Leo Pecover missed key opportunities to put City ahead, chances they would come to rue.
Around the 20-minute mark, Irish youth international Billy O’Neill broke the deadlock to give the Reds the lead. He beat his defender with a sharp first touch before placing a low, left-footed shot past the Millwall goalkeeper from just inside the area.
City created further half-chances through Pecover and Ephraim Yeboah shortly after O'Neill's opener. Failing to convert those opportunities proved to be costly as Millwall started their comeback.
Just after the half-hour mark, Yanis Issoufou brought the visitors level with a composed finish. The winger ran onto a through ball and chipped neatly over City goalkeeper Isaac Finch.
Millwall then grabbed the lead before the break following a period of sustained pressure. Jack Howland fired a low strike into the bottom corner, with Finch unable to keep the effort out, despite getting a hand to it.
Millwall sealed the victory early in the second half when Dan Ezendu conceded a penalty, having been judged to have fouled his man. Howland calmly converted the spot-kick to score his second goal of the afternoon.
Tuesday's loss leaves Carey’s squad winless in their last four matches across all competitions. They will look to exit this rut next Friday, when they travel to South Wales to face Swansea City.
