Former Ipswich Town goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky has retired from the professional game at the age of 35, having played a pivotal role in one of the most memorable periods in the club’s recent history.
The Czech international kept the net secure for three years at Portman Road, from 2021 to 2024, and will be fondly remembered by Town fans for his stellar contribution to their promotion-winning Championship campaign.
While his time at Ipswich did not always go to plan, Hladky will always be remembered by Town supporters for his vital role in their memorable 2023/24 campaign.
Hladky joined Ipswich in the summer of 2021 from Salford City as one of the first signings of a new era at Portman Road, but his route to becoming Town’s number one was never going to be a simple one. Despite only being in the County for a matter of months, the club snapped up Christian Walton on their way towards promotion and sent Hladky into oblivion.
Many would have been tempted to head back out on the transfer market in search of more regular game time, but not Hladky.
His perseverance was rewarded when the Czechian was handed the gloves again following Walton’s injury prior to the 2023/24 campaign. The goalkeeper was to become a pivotal part of the side that secured promotion back to the top flight of English football, playing the vast majority of games in the process.
His poise in possession, ability to play out from the back and consistency between the sticks was all down to the type of player Kieran McKenna wanted at the club. By the time they were back in the Premier League, Hladky had become one of the most influential players in the squad.
Despite his outstanding season, Hladky’s time at Ipswich came to an end during the summer of 2024. After talks about a new contract collapsed, his tenure at the club came to an end when his current deal expired.
He joined Burnley and was determined to continue playing in the top flight. However, he found it incredibly challenging as he only featured five times in all competitions in two years at Turf Moor and did not manage to appear once in the league.
Although he was a member of another championship-winning team, he was unable to break into the starting line-up.
Following his release by Burnley this summer, the goalkeeper looked set to make an emotional return to his hometown club Zbrojovka Brno, where he started out playing soccer
But after failed negotiations, it was a much bigger decision that Hladky had to make. Speaking to radio station Radiožurnálu Sport, the Czechian revealed he had decided to call time on his playing career
“After talks with Zbrojovka didn’t work out, I ended my career. I’m focusing on my own pursuits and enjoying every day away from football.”
While Hladky can savour a successful career, there is one area that leaves him with a touch of regret. He was in Burnley’s squad and came so close to playing in the Premier League, but never did. The former Town keeper admitted as much but is thankful for the experience.
“Perhaps a bit disappointing, on the other hand it was a great experience for me and a cherry on my career, that I could be that close and see everything live.”
When Ipswich supporters reflect on Hladky’s time at the club, it is unlikely to be on contract wrangles or competition for places. Instead, they will remember a goalkeeper who stood up when needed and played his part in one of the most remarkable achievements in the club’s recent history.
During his spell in Suffolk, he made 71 appearances in all competitions and kept an impressive 23 clean sheets, with his displays in the Championship promotion campaign proving particularly memorable for Town fans.
Having also featured for the likes of Slovan Liberec and St Mirren, as well as the Czech Republic at youth level, Hladky will leave the game knowing he has enjoyed a career filled with memorable moments.
And, for the Blues’ fans, he will always be remembered as one of the names instrumental in helping their club return to the Premier League.
