Visa Cash App Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson has made a pointed comment about Red Bull while addressing his future at the United States Grand Prix.

Lawson, 24, was drafted in as Sergio Perez’s replacement at Red Bull ahead of the 2025 season, following an impressive spell with the sister team.

However, the New Zealander endured a horrible spell, and he was replaced by Yuki Tsunoda after just two races.

Since being demoted back to Racing Bulls, Lawson has produced some consistent results and even impressed at Red Bull when he replaced the injured Isack Hadjar for three races.

Despite scoring 75 points this season, Lawson’s future remains uncertain, with F2 star Nikola Tsolov said to be in the running for a seat at Racing Bulls.

  • December 2024 — Red Bull promoted Lawson to partner Max Verstappen, replacing the axed Sergio Perez.
  • March 2025 — Red Bull demoted Lawson to Racing Bulls after two races, promoting Yuki Tsunoda.
  • July 2026 — Racing Bulls boss Alan Permane said Nikola Tsolov is 'next in line' for promotion.
  • August 2026 — Lawson returned to Red Bull, deputising for the injured Isack Hadjar for three races.
  • October 2026 — Lawson admits he could leave the Red Bull set-up.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, Lawson admitted that he would look to leave the Red Bull family if he can see a better opportunity elsewhere.

The 24-year-old also hinted that Red Bull’s decision over driver line-ups has not always been based on performance.

As reported by GP Blog, Lawson has explained why he would consider leaving Red Bull.

He said: “I don't know if I have to do anything, but I think, for me personally, I mean, for all of us as drivers, our goal is to win.

“So for me, my focus is to put myself in a position where I can be winning for one, and if I can go to a team that gives me a better chance to do that, that's obviously what we're what we get to do.”

“The Red Bull specifics of it, I think they've shown many times in the past that sometimes that's not entirely why they make decisions, so it is something that I don't know what's going to happen next year, but for me, it's honestly not really what I'm thinking about now.”

Over the years, Red Bull have been brutal when it comes to driver line-ups, with the likes of Lawson, Tsunoda, Perez, Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo having tried and failed to match the standards set by Max Verstappen.

Meanwhile, Red Bull have also lost several senior figures in recent years, including big names like Christian Horner, Adrian Newey, Rob Marshall and Jonathan Wheatley.

Away from Red Bull, Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli has the chance to seal the world title this weekend in Austin and become Formula 1's youngest ever world champion.

For that to happen, Antonelli must win the race with George Russell finishing ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth or lower.

Speaking ahead of the weekend, Antonelli said: “It's crazy if you think about it, but that's why I won't think about it.

“For me [it] needs to be a perfect weekend and the others, they need to do a poor result, which is unlikely to happen. Of course, anything can happen and it's crazy to think about it.”
