Chelsea summer signing says he 'must improve' in worrying admission

Marco Palestra hasn't had quite the introduction to life at Chelsea that he would have hoped for.

The Italian arrived at Stamford Bridge with plenty of excitement surrounding his potential, but injuries and a difficult first start have meant he has been forced to wait for his chances.

There is certainly no shortage of expectations following his arrival from Atalanta, particularly after an impressive campaign in Italy.

However, the 21-year-old appears under no illusions about the work still required to establish himself in west London.

Marco Palestra admits he needs to improve at Chelsea

As reported by the Evening Standard, Palestra has openly acknowledged that he must improve if he is to become a success at Chelsea.

The wing-back reflected on the moment he discovered his move to Stamford Bridge was happening.

"I was just happy because, when I was young, I never thought I could be a Chelsea player," he explained.

"So the first emotion was only happiness. Now I am still happy, but I need to improve myself to win with this team."

It is an honest assessment from a player who has plenty to prove. Palestra joined Chelsea from Atalanta in a deal worth around £45million, becoming the first signing of Xabi Alonso's managerial reign.

The Italian had to wait for his opportunity after suffering an injury at the beginning of the season, eventually making his first competitive start in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Manchester United.

It wasn't an entirely convincing individual performance, with some supporters questioning his defensive positioning, although Chelsea did manage to keep a much-needed home clean sheet.

There is understandable patience with a young player adapting to a new league, but Palestra will also know that Chelsea's expectations are what they are for a reason.

Palestra must turn potential into performances

There are plenty of reasons to stay optimistic about the young defender. He was named Serie A Defender of the Year last season following an impressive loan spell at Cagliari, where his versatility led to his move to Stamford Bridge.

He is comfortable operating on either flank and possesses the pace and ability to carry the ball forward.

However, potential only takes a player so far at a club like Chelsea. Palestra needs regular minutes, consistency and improvements in the defensive areas of his game if he is to justify the investment.

The upcoming trip to Sunderland could provide another opportunity to build on his first start, although Alonso will have decisions to make when selecting his wing-backs.
