The Minnesota Wild are 9-3-3 with 21 points, first in the Central Division and the Western Conference, as they get ready for a two-game road trip that starts in Washington, but not until Sunday.
Their last time out, Thursday in St. Paul, the Wild lost 4-3 in overtime to the New York Islanders. In the hours since, they’ve been tweaking the roster. On Friday, general manager Bill Guerin reassigned defenseman Carson Lambos and Mason Shaw to Iowa.
That left the Wild with a dozen forwards on the roster. Michael Russo (The Athletic) noted at the time that Guerin would “obviously recall a forward again for the road trip.”
Sure enough, on Saturday morning, the Minnesota Wild officially recalled Shaw less than 24 hours after sending him down to Iowa.
This is Mason Shaw’s second trip up this season, after the Wild initially recalled him Oct. 24. He did not appear in a game before being sent back down Friday.
Minnesota re-signed the former fourth-round pick on July 1 to a one-year, two-way deal worth $850,000 in the NHL and $450,000 in the AHL. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Not only does he captain the Iowa Wild, but he also leads the AHL affiliate in points, posting four goals and six assists in 10 games so far this season. His 131 career points down in Iowa are tied for fifth in franchise history.
The Wild drafted Shaw, who turns 28 on Tuesday, No. 97 overall in 2017. He’s played 82 NHL games (8 goals, 12 assists), all with Minnesota. In 2022-23, Shaw played a career-high 59 games, totaling 17 points that season.
Despite his experience, his last NHL game came on April 15, 2024, at Los Angeles. Knee injuries haven’t helped his situation. Over his young NHL career, Shaw has already had four ACL surgeries, as reported by Joe Smith (The Athletic) earlier this month.
Shaw did spend some time outside the Minnesota Wild organization recently, playing the previous two seasons with the Manitoba Moose, the Winnipeg Jets’ AHL affiliate. As Manitoba’s captain in 2025-26, he put up 44 points in 71 games.
