‘I don’t feel it as my own’ – Simeone wants to share historic LaLiga record
‘I don’t feel it as my own’ – Simeone wants to share historic LaLiga record

Diego Simeone equalled Luis Aragones' LaLiga wins record with Atletico Madrid's 2-0 victory over Levante, but he says it has been a team effort over the last 15 years.

Simeone has now won 344 LaLiga games in charge of Atletico, becoming the manager with the joint-most wins in the competition's history.

However, while Aragones hit that total in 756 games at multiple clubs – including seven spells at Atletico – it took Simeone 565 games to get there with Atleti (W344 D123 L98).

Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone secured the victory for Atletico, which temporarily moved them top of LaLiga, until Barcelona's 6-1 win over Alaves later on Saturday.

And when asked how he felt to equal Aragones' record, Simeone said it was not solely his achievement.

"I don't feel like it is my own. Sorry to share," he said.

"I do have to go back to the moment when Miguel Angel [Gil, CEO] thought of me and counted on me, when I was not yet a coach with much experience in Europe.

"The opportunity he gave me – we wouldn't have got to this place without that support.

"Not to mention the people on my coaching staff in all these years, the work in these 14 years, and the absolute gratitude I have for the players.

"Without them, this is impossible; without being able to share the commitment, the humility, the insistence on playing for an idea, to follow a plan, and I have always had many men who have helped me, reinforcing the place I have.

"Every day that a match is going to start, I give thanks because spending 15 years at a club is not easy.

"Building everything is not easy, but I am grateful to Miguel Angel, to Enrique [Cerezo, club chairman], to the players, to my coaching staff who accompanied me, to the current team. Without all of them, I would not have reached this place."

Atletico have won seven consecutive games in LaLiga, the longest active streak in the top five European leagues (ahead of Paris Saint-Germain – six in Ligue 1).

The last time they won seven or more consecutive matches in the competition was in January 2025 (eight).

"The game started hard, difficult. We knew that they were going to start well," he said.

"[Jan] Oblak had a very good save, and then we began to press better, to understand where we could do damage. Morten's [Hjulmand] disallowed goal appeared, which was what we wanted to look for.

"Grimaldo's goal came [from] understanding the ways to win the game. I think it was a great second half; the first 30 minutes, those who watch the training sessions behind the fence can say that we worked on these transitions to face a team like Levante.

"The play was extraordinary, and [Alex] Baena has an incredible ability to see Giuliano's break and the definition as well.

"And then, with that second goal, we needed to defend. Robin [Le Normand], [Alexander] Sorloth, Jonathan [David] and [Ademola] Lookman came in well, and we need everyone."
