Here’s your poisoned chalice Matthias Jaissle

A couple of months into this Newcastle United season and we are already seeing a revolt from what appears to be a sizeable number of fans against Matthias Jaissle.

A man who when he arrived at St James’ Park was heralded as a great young manager, ideal to lead our reset to become a club challenging for major honours in the not so distant future.

While I would not try to defend how we found ourselves in this situation, I would argue that not everything should be aimed at the door of Matthias Jaissle.

In recent matches he doesn’t seem to have reacted quickly enough to tactical problems and persists with a plan that is clearly not working.

Matthias Jaissle using players who are either not one hundred per cent behind his plan, or simply do not understand the plan, if that’s the case then you only need to look around the ground to see the players are not the only ones…

Issues need to be resolved, you cannot continually do the same thing and expect the result to be any different.

He may have been a little naive in what he was walking into but others contributed greatly to the Newcastle United dream he was sold. At the start of the discussions he may well have felt that he was being offered the holy grail but it is quickly becoming a poisoned chalice.

The appointment was made by Newcastle United Sporting Director Ross Wilson, along with CEO David Hopkinson.

Perhaps the pair caught on the hop by Eddie Howe’s departure but should surely have been better prepared for such an eventuality, as any well run business should always have a plan to deal with any sudden problems.

Even though Hopkinson and Wilson were happy to herald the new manager’s arrival, their silence since then has been deafening.

A time when the club and fans should be pulling together and showing a United front, rather than pushing Matthias Jaissle forward alone to face the flak.

This would be a really good time for one or all of the senior management to offer public support for the manager, regardless of what is said in private conversations.

Looking at the senior club staff behind the scenes since the takeover….

We have been told there is a plan to take us to a level by 2030 that will allow us to compete with the big boys.

What we have seen since takeover five years ago is the club part company with Amanda Staveley, her departure downgrading the levels of communication between the club and the fans. There have been three Directors of Football so far and two CEOs (the latter clearly out of the club’s control).

This lack of continuity has certainly not helped progress, made even worse with a key period in summer 2025 when the two most senior roles saw nobody actively working at the club..

It is from a fan perspective very difficult to understand why an ambitious club would sell so much experience from the playing squad and replace it with potential.

I know Manchester United achieved success with kids back in the 1990s, but the young Man U stars had played together for many years in their Academy, rather than drawn from all over Europe and expected to gel overnight.

It seems like a policy to cash in selling the players in at some stage rather than chase success.

I hope I am proved wrong and wish Matthias Jaissle and his  players the best of luck, but I have to admit, it feels like this Newcastle United squad is lacking in many areas.
