Studs and duds from Broncos’ wild win over Chiefs in Week 8

The Denver Broncos once again, found a way to win against a great team in the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos mounted a furious comeback, not quite the 33-point masterpiece they did against the New York Giants last fall, but instead it was a 15-point comeback that eventually ended in a wild goal-line stand in a 28-24 win in Week 8. The win pushed Denver to 6-2 and in full control of the AFC West, and the masters of their own fate.

We take a look at the five studs and duds from the wild win over the Chiefs.

Stud: Jonah Coleman

Jonah Coleman made his case for getting more carries in future weeks, and possibly taking a hold on the RB1 position. While veteran J.K. Dobbins started the first half on offense, it was Coleman who started the second half and had critical plays down the line in the victory. Coleman rushed for 41 yards on 11 carries, had a rushing touchdown and 63 yards receiving. Most of those yards came on a 52-yard catch just before the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter. Coleman should see more action in the coming weeks, which means Dobbins could possibly take a backseat.

Dud: Missed assignments

It seemed like on every Chiefs drive, there was a missed assignment. One of those happened on the 73-yard toss to running back Emmett Johnson, and a pass to Travis Kelce on the final drive, which put Kansas City into the red zone. The Broncos were playing with two backup safeties in the game in Taylor Rapp and Devon Key (and later JL Skinner) with Brandon Jones going down mid-game. Hopefully Talanoa Hufanga comes back in time for Week 9, or for Week 11 after the bye.

Stud: Fourth-quarter Bo Nix

In a time when the Broncos needed him most, quarterback Bo Nix once again delivered the goods. After facing an 11-point deficit going into the fourth quarter, Nix led the Broncos to a score to cut the game to three, and the score to put them ahead late in the game. Nix threw a touchdown on 4th down, followed by a two-point conversion. Nix has once again shown he is one of the best in the business at mounting and completing fourth-quarter comebacks. It was Nix's 20th win since last season, good for most in the NFL during that span.

Dud: Third-quarter offense

Three drives. Nine plays. Nine yards. That was all the Broncos had in the third quarter. It was a pretty pitiful performance for the offense. Due to their offensive ineptitude, Denver allowed Kansas City to march downfield and increase the lead to 11.

Stud: The goal-line stand

What can we say? The goal-line stand was the four-down stand of the game. Kansas City got down inside the 5 with a minute to go. They got to the 1 with 35 seconds left. They tackled Kenneth Walker outside the 1 with 4 seconds left. The crowd, riled into a frenzy, caused a false start before the final play. And then Malcolm Roach came up with the biggest play of the game, sacking Patrick Mahomes on the final play of the game, ending it in a win. The defense came up so clutch in so many situations last year, and it was fitting to have it come down to the final play made by the defense in this one.

The Broncos hope to continue their win streak on the road against the Carolina Panthers in Week 9, in an early game on the East Coast next Sunday.
