The aftershocks of Chelsea’s defeat to Spurs on Saturday evening continue.
It wasn’t just losing at home to our rivals – it was losing in such feeble fashion. There has been a lot of criticism of Xabi Alonso and his tactics, but the plaers deserve some blame too.
Cole Palmer had a poor game, and ended up getting sent off. Simon Johnson’s article for the Athletic notes that a guy who is supposed to be “ice cold” showed a real lack of cool here,
He could have got a red for barging into Mateus Fernandes, a moment of pure frustration. He was lucky to get a yellow, and he then got another yellow for a late tackle on Conor Gallagher ten minutes later.
Going down to ten men killed any hopes of a Chelsea fight back.
Let’s not forget what happened a week ago – Palmer was given a massive break when he wasn’t booked for kicking the ball away. He did later get a yellow for dissent. That’s four yellow card offences in two games – he’s lucky to get away with just one red.
He’s got to grow up and think about the team.
The decision to use Morgan Rogers up top rather than Danny Welbeck also raised some eyebrows.
Chelsea’s overall setup was criticised as too “passive” in general as it allowed Tottenham to gain confidence in the game.
Alonso spoke about Mike Penders’ mistake and how he was going to help him recover from it.
