Man Utd 'approach' Julian Nagelsmann' amid Michael Carrick uncertainty

Manchester United have reportedly made an approach to Julian Nagelsmann as they consider replacing Michael Carrick as manager

Julian Nagelsmann has been sounded out regarding taking over from Michael Carrick as Manchester United boss following the club's dismal start to the campaign. United have managed just two victories across Premier League and Champions League fixtures this term, with Wednesday evening's 4-1 thrashing by Como extending their drought to seven games without a win in all competitions.

The continental disappointment has heightened pressure on Carrick, while skipper Bruno Fernandes raised concerns about the coaching team's choice not to implement a man-to-man pressing system. Sunday's home fixture against Bournemouth could prove pivotal for Carrick's future, with United understood to be already considering possible successors.

According to talkSPORT, Nagelsmann has emerged as a contender to take the reins. The ex-Germany boss is currently unattached after resigning from his international position.

Nagelsmann is believed to have supporters within United's hierarchy and was heavily discussed before Carrick secured the position permanently. The German tactician is also understood to be receptive to accepting the role.

The 39-year-old is fluent in English and has previously collaborated with United's recruitment chief, Christopher Vivell, during their time at RB Leipzig.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler is also said to be near the top of United's wishlist, having made a strong impression during his spell on the south coast.

However, his recently-penned long-term deal could mean United would face a hefty compensation payment if they decide to pursue the German tactician - who does not have a release clause in his contract, according to reports. Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe are also options, with Conte having departed Napoli in the summer.

Former Newcastle boss Howe is seen as a straightforward appointment given his availability as a free agent. Howe was previously backed by former United sporting director Dan Ashworth, though minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to have been against the move.

Although talkSPORT reports that Carrick didn't turn up at Carrington at his customary 7.30am on Thursday, he's still anticipated to take charge of Sunday's Premier League encounter with the Cherries (2pm kick-off).

The United boss gave an indication of just how furious he was about his side's display on Wednesday night. "I'm bitterly disappointed," he said.

"I'm frustrated, more than frustrated, I'm really angry to be honest. You've got to move on and think about what's next. For us to play in that way is not acceptable, it wasn't a good performance at all."
