The Kansas City Chiefs have looked rejuvenated and have started the season 5-0 behind a different dimension offered on the ground by running back Kenneth Walker III. The Chiefs have been linked with a move to bolster their wide receiver room after star wideout Tyquan Thornton was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a left ankle dislocation injury.
Former Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson recently suggested an interesting trade alternative to give quarterback Patrick Mahomes another offensive weapon to work with.
During Tuesday’s “Set Hut!” segment of the “NFL on CBS” show, Wilson suggested that the Chiefs should trade for New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
“If I’m the Kansas City Chiefs, I’m gonna get Garrett Wilson,” Wilson said.
He continued, saying, “If the Jets keep losing, I’m gonna go get Garrett Wilson because I believe that Garrett Wilson, down the field, with his ability, he’s a smart guy, he learns quickly, he’d be great in the Andy Reid-style offense. That’s somebody that I think I would look at, and there’s a couple of other guys too, but, to me, Garrett Wilson with the Kansas City Chiefs would be incredible.”
“Patrick Mahomes and him, how he gets in and out of his breaks. They haven’t had a receiver like him. He deserves to win. If I’m the Kansas City Chiefs, I’m watching Garrett Wilson. I’m seeing how he could continue to progress before the trade deadline.”
The Jets selected Wilson No. 10 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in his first season in New York and establishing himself as one of the league’s most potent offensive stars.
The former Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver recorded three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to start his NFL career before a right knee injury limited him to seven games last season, during which he still amassed 395 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns on 36 receptions.
The talented wide receiver signed a lucrative four-year, $130 million contract extension with the Jets last year.
Even before the season started, the Chiefs’ wide receiver room was viewed as one of the team’s biggest question marks, and the loss of Thornton has exacerbated their need to improve that unit. Kansas City has until the November 10 trade deadline to test the Jets’ resolve with an offer for Wilson.
Wilson has had an impressive start to the season for the Jets, amassing 418 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns on 35 receptions, earning a PFN’s NFL WR Impact grade of 82.8, ranking 12th.
Despite Wilson’s performances, the Jets have struggled this season and currently hold a 2-4 record.
